There was significant climate change during the Devonian period. An ocean covered a huge percent of the land during this period. There is some evidence of ice caps but it is thought that the climate was warm. It is during this time period that it is thought that North America and Europe collided which made mountain ranges in the Eastern part of North America. Towards the end of the Devonian period there was a mass extinction event. The sea level went down and it may have caused some of the extinction that took place at the end of this period. It is not certain what caused the mass extinction but the first vertebrates came to the land during this time.

Plants continued to grow during the Devonian Period. Lycophytes, horsetails and ferns grew huge and created forests. Archaeopteris were the first trees. They grew up to 98 feet tall with the trunk being more than 3 feet in diameter. By the end of the Devonian Period there were many plants that may have been part of the reason for the cooling of the climate and the extinction event that took place.

Millipedes, Centipedes and Arachnids existed during the Devonian Period. Some of the first Amphibians also came into existence during this period. Tetrapods evolved from lobe finned fishes. The earliest tetrapod was the Tiktaalik rosae. This creature was said to be the link between the lobe finned fishes and the early amphibians. This animal had a crocodile like head, a moveable neck and nostrils for breathing air.
