The minimum charge for seeing a play would be one penny (now it would be about 60 cents) if you were in the pit. The people in the pit were considered "groundlings" , but higher classes could pay for a covered seat. The best seats would be one shilling (now $7). A full house would be around 800 groundlings and 1500 others in the "galleries".

Unlike stages nowadays there was no front curtain ; so in death scenes actor would have to be carried off. There was no scenery so the audience would use their imagination. This made the audience rely on the playwright's descriptive skills. The stage was covered by a canopy (painted to look like heaven on the bottom). There was also a trap door for dramatic entrances , and curtained areas in the back for scenes. Balconies were also located on the stage.

Shakespeare's plays were mostly always written in "blank verse" ; or unrhymed lines that have ten syllables. His first plays rhymed and had a "fashionable" rhythm as later on he moved on from that , and become more expressive than what rhyme would allow. This allowed more emotion in the dialogue which was a great advantage. This would allow for him to work with imagination as well.
