The Hate U Give is about a 16 year old girl named Starr Carter who witnesses her childhood friend Khalil get shot for no reason by a white police officer. Starr lives in Garden Heights which is a predominantly black neighborhood, but she goes to a private school called Williamson which is a predominantly white school. Once Khalil's death is publicized many people are labeling him as a drug dealer. No one knows what actually happened the night of the shooting except for Starr. Starr must fight for what she believes in despite the obstacles that she will face.

I like the fact that this book was so relatable and I was able to make a lot of text to self connections throughout the story. One part of the many plots in the story that was interesting to me is when Starr and Hailey were in the gym and Hailey said a stereotypical comment to star. I think this was interesting because Hailey didn't find anything wrong with the comment while Starr found it racist. I find it crazy how people will say something and not think anything of it, but someone else might take it a different way. One of many connections that I had was with the main character Starr. For one we both love Drake. Another connection I was able to make was how both me and Starr try to change the way we act around certain people so we don''t come off as ¨ghetto.¨

I would definitely recommend this book for white and black teenagers. I think that because most of the main characters in The Hate U Give are teenagers it makes it easier to understand and relate to them. I also think that this book touches on many important topics that teens today should be aware of. One being Black Lives Matter. It is important for our teens to know and understand what is going on in the world around them.

The song that I chose was Be Free by J Cole. I chose this song because it is a tribute to Mike Brown and every other black person who has died because of police brutality. In the song J Cole talks about how every time he steps outside he sees one of his friends getting killed by a cop (Khalil.) On the song he also puts a real interview from an eyewitness account (Starr.)

Quote 1 pg. 247

¨Has your son told you why he made the decision to shoot?¨
¨Brian says he had his back to the kid, and he heard the kid say I'm gonna show your ass today.¨
No,no, no. Khalil asked if I was ok.
I chose this quote because this shows how the dad of the police officer who shot Khalil tried to change the story completely on his reasoning for shooting at Khalil. From Starr's response we can tell that the officer's dad was clearly lying to make his son sound innocent.

¨Can't believe you dating a white boy.¨
He sits next to me and steals a graham cracker sandwich.
¨A wigga at that.¨
¨Excuse you?¨
I say with a mouth full of peanut butter.
¨He is not a wigga.¨
¨Please! Dude wearing J's. White boys wear converse and Vans, not no J's unless they trying to be black.¨
I chose this quote because it shows you how many black male teens feel. It also shows you how they kids nowadays are attaching sneakers to a race. Just because someone is a certain race means they can't wear certain sneakers?

¨I'm breaking all of my Williamson Starr rules with zero fucks to give.¨
What Starr meant by this quote is that usually in school Starr acts a certain way because she doesn't want to come off as ¨ghetto,¨ but this day in particular Starr doesn't care how she comes off.
