He came up with this concept in order to show the other Christians around the world what they believe in there in Massachusetts. Winthrop also had a strong belief in education and talked about how it was necessary to help everyone read the word of God. Due to this strong belief in education, they decided to build the first public school in 1635, which eventually led to the establishment of more schools. If someone was accused of being a witch, then they would have to go to trial. There was no way of not going to the trial, you were forced to go if accused. Most of the time the Trial would accuse people guilty of witchcraft and because of this the people accused would be thrown in jail or even occasionally executed. Total depravity meant that everyone is a sinner, from the second that they leave their mothers' wombs. They also believed in limited atonement, which was the belief that Jesus chose specific people to go to heaven, and if you weren't chosen then you would go straight to hell. Thirdly they believed in predestination, where God has already chosen your fate if you would go to heaven or hell, and there was nothing you can do to change your determined fate. They then settled in Massachusetts in North America, where they wanted to spread their own beliefs and wanted religious freedom. They lived very simple lives where they would only where black and white clothing, and lived in small simple houses. They all believed in total depravity, predestination, grace, and limited atonement. Over 200 people were placed in prison and 19 people were hung in 1692 because of these witchcraft accusations. The whole thing started from a little girl named Betty Parris and her friends showing strange and unusual behavior, were in pain, were ill, and exhibited weird screams. These girls then began to accuse many different people of witchcraft, some of these people being religious and frequently attended church.
