         <description><![CDATA[<div>I marked this page with a lot of *s and I made some T-S connections. I was very surprised by the statement that 40% of schools have either eliminated or are in the process of eliminating recess time. It is crazy to me with all the research about exercise being good for kids and their learning, that they would be taking it out of schools.<br>Also I made a T-S connection&nbsp;when the book talked about weather being an excuse for no recess.&nbsp;At the old school I worked at, the kids had no outside recess all winter long!! As soon as it got cold outside they did not have outdoor recess or even recess in the gym- teachers were required to provide recess in their rooms if they wanted to. I have always been a big fan of brain breaks and mini dance breaks, but it doesn't beat getting to run around outside. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>As a reading teacher I know have been guilty quite a bit of rushing students. With only 35-40 minutes with students it can be hard to fit in everything I want to get done. As much as I hate to do it, I have cut students short while reading in order to bring the group back together to discuss. I like to take a couple minutes at the beginning of group just to talk to the kids and transition them into reading group, but I definitely think I could work on not rushing kids throughout group. </div>]]></description>

         <title>p.26/27- Retention T-S</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>While reading the section on retention and the benefits of doing it with some students, it really made me think of my own nieces. The idea of multiyear preschool of prekindergarten placements was exactly what their school decided to implement. I have three nieces that all go to the same school. Their school implemented JK or junior kindergarten about 10 years ago. So the grade levels are Pre-K, JK, and then Kindergarten. Two of my nieces have very late birthdays, narrowly being included within the cut off date, making them the youngest in their classes. After Pre-K, both of their teachers suggested that they move to JK instead of Kindergarten. Neither of them had problems with academics, but developmentally they really weren't ready for K. Their parents agreed that this was the right move and after one year they were ready for K. My last niece has a February birthday and based on screenings and observations her teacher advised that after pre-k she proceed straight to K.&nbsp;Their school really did think about what was right for the developmentally and they didn't just push them along because age was they should have been moving up. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I made so many connections while rereading the 9 year old section. "Nothing is fair to a nine year old..." (p.108). In my groups students do poetry performances sometimes and my fourth grade group is the only one that struggle with voting for a winner. They think it is unfair to do so, even though we all share things we think each person did well and what that person can improve on. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"Can work in groups but may spend more time arguing about facts, rules, and directions than doing the actual activity" (p.113)- One of my fourth grade groups tends to argue with each other about everything. We are working through it, but it can be challenging to get them to always focus on the task at hand without arguing. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"But test-taking is a difficult task for nine year olds; in fact, it can be a disaster". (p.108) This was very eye opening for me. 4th grade is really a year where testing is more emphasized, but yet it is not a good time for them to be tested. Knowing that most 4th graders are 9 year olds, why wouldn't they give that year off for testing?</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"Elevens are often genuinely surprised that adults take offense at their challenges and they are easily hurt". (p.133) It is interested to see the sharp contrasts between 10 and 11. At the same time, knowing the differences is important. 11 year olds may challenge adults, but teachers need to understand the underlying developmental appropriateness of this and respond in the correct way. </div>]]></description>
