Darrow, Clarence. "Capital Punishment Will Not Safeguard Society (1928)." The Death Penalty, edited by Mary E. Williams, Greenhaven Press, 2002. Opposing Viewpoints. Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints, link.gale.com/apps/doc/EJ3010124246/OVIC?u=cobb90289&sid=bookmark-OVIC&xid=ef8e8329. Accessed 12 Mar. 2025.

The purpose of the article was to tell the readers that some people are deemed social unfortunates and to say that capital punishment is no deterrent to crime and second, that the state continues to kill its victims, not so much to defend society against them for it could do that equally well by imprisonment but to appease the emotions of hatred and revenge. This article shows Clarence Darrow's cases and his handling of criminal and labor cases. The intended audience is the is population of England and America. This source uses logos and pathos by using logical arguments and emotional appeal to the readers. This article will help with abolition of the death penalty and argues that capital punishment does not effectively deter crime. It explains how many homicides are committed in emotional states such as anger, fear, or during robberies, where the threat of death is not a consideration. Also emphasizes that crime is often the result of complex social, economic, and psychological factors, rather than a simple matter of "evil" individuals who need to be punished. There is a possible defect in the fact the author uses bias feelings to the subject and is only using pathos to draw emotional appeal to the readers. This article was useful and relevant to my topic.

Amnesty International. "The Death Penalty Should Be Abolished." Criminal Justice, edited by David Haugen and Susan Musser, Greenhaven Press, 2009. Opposing Viewpoints. Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints, link.gale.com/apps/doc/EJ3010119285/OVIC?u=cobb90289&sid=bookmark-OVIC&xid=6a45a87a. Accessed 12 Mar. 2025. Originally published as "The Death Penalty v. Human Rights: Why Abolish the Death Penalty?" 2007.

The purpose of the article is to tell that the government uses the death penalty as a punishment violates human rights. This article shows the viewpoint from amnesty international and how they argue additional factors to support its call for the abolition of the death penalty to include the possibility of an innocent person being sentenced to death and the lack of evidence supporting the claim that the threat of death as punishment deters the crime. The intended audience was for the worldwide population. This article uses logos by using facts and numbers from articles and statistics. This article will help with getting the death penalty abolished and lowering the statistic numbers of crime rate. It also explains the effect of political violence with this against racial or ethical minorities. There is a possible defect in the fact that the statistics done line up with the point the article is trying to bring across. This article was not very useful to my topic but good with numbers.
