In the late 1800's 2.5 million Armenians were living under the Ottoman Empire. Armenians had their own language, culture, and religion which sometimes made them seem outsiders to the rest of the Muslim empire. At a certain point, Armenians wanted to become independent as nationalists feelings grew. "During the 1890s, Ottoman troops killed tens of thousands of Armenians." (pg.419) When war broke out in 1914, the Ottomans claimed that the Armenians were supportive of the Triple Entente, the opposite side of the Ottomans. The Ottoman Empires government deproted 2 million people and took claim to their land. While on their journey out of the empire, more than 600,00 were killed or died of starvation. By 1920, the 2.5 million Armenian population had fallen to 400,000.

The Bosnian Genocide

The Bosnian Genocide, which unfolded during the Bosnian War in the early to mid-1990s, primarily in Bosnia and Herzegovina within the Balkans, represents a tragic and dark period in history. This genocide involved a systematic campaign of ethnic cleansing and mass killings, with multiple parties, including Bosnian Serb forces, Croatian forces, and Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) civilians, participating. Deep-seated ethnic and religious tensions, exacerbated by the dissolution of Yugoslavia, served as the underlying cause of the conflict. The Bosnian Serb leadership, led by figures like Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić, aimed to establish an ethnically homogeneous Serbian state within Bosnia and Herzegovina. The genocide encompassed mass killings, including mass executions and sexual violence, as well as the forced displacement of Bosniak and Croat communities. The infamous Srebrenica massacre in July 1995, claiming the lives of over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys, remains a haunting symbol of this tragedy. International intervention and the establishment of war crimes tribunals sought justice for the perpetrators. The Bosnian Genocide serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of ethnic divisions, political motives, and the systematic use of violence on a large scale.

The Rwandan Genocide

The Rwandan Genocide of 1994, which unfolded in East Africa, specifically Rwanda, stands as a dark chapter in history, orchestrated primarily by the Hutu ethnic majority against the Tutsi minority. This atrocity was marked by a methodical and brutal campaign to eliminate an estimated 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutu individuals. Deep-seated ethnic tensions and historical divisions served as the volatile backdrop for this conflict, where the extremist Hutu government and various factions utilized propaganda to dehumanize the Tutsi population. Over the course of roughly 100 days, from April to July 1994, this genocide was propelled by the belief that eradicating the Tutsi was essential to maintaining political power. Mass killings, often perpetrated with machetes and rudimentary weapons, coupled with sexual violence and the forcible displacement of Tutsi individuals, constituted the horrific means by which this genocide was executed. The airwaves were weaponized, as radio broadcasts and propaganda played a pivotal role in fomenting violence and hatred, underscoring how a deadly amalgamation of ethnic animosities, manipulation, and political objectives can result in appalling genocidal acts.
