Lee was forced to retreat/surrender and although there high number number of casualties it did more damage to the Confederates. By the end of the war more than a third of Lee's solider's were lost compared to the North which had only lost 23,000. This goes back to the industrial revolution which started in 1760 and ended in 1840. The industrial revolution allowed for the North to develop inventions that would provide crucial to the Civil war and other inventions were perfected just in time. Inventions such as the steam engine (1769), used to power steam railroads and steamships, telegraphs (1844,left picture) which allowed for instant communication. An estimate of 15,000 miles of telegraph cable was placed solely for military purposes. The steel plow (1837) allowed for an increase in grain production used to provide military and exports and later in 1847 the mechanical reaper which was more common in the north than south. It increased production even more. The Establishment of factories as well, the North was able manufacture most of it's firearms unlike the south. They were essential for moving troops, supplies, reinforcements (for example the Battle of Gettysburg) and medical supplies were set up on direct routes where the armies were camped. Even medial evacuations were established. Understanding the rail network become crucial to managing operations and tactics. For example General William Tecumseh Sherman (Sherman's March to the Sea) who's strategy was to lead around 60,000 solider from Atlanta to Georgia and destroy any supply line of the Confederates. Rail lines that lead to Chattanooga Tennessee were destroyed, heated and then bent to create a necktie shape, this become known as Sherman's Neckties. Not only that but it also prevent the interference of foreign nations, specifically France And Britain, in the Civil War on behalf of Confederate states due to their opposition to slavery (the institution of slavery was illegal in both countries). Looking back at the Battle of Gettysburg,the difference in leadership between confederate general Robert Lee. and Union General George G. Meade it is obvious to why the outcome of the war was in favor of the union. Before officially going to battle, General George held a council of war in order to discuss the tactics that would used while General Lee accepted no input from his subordinates, especially after his disagreement with second in command, General James Longstreet.
