Domain names are an easier way to identify one or more IP addresses. Domain names are used in URLs (Uniform Resource Locator) to identify web pages.

Why are domain names preffered over IP addresses?

Domain names that use words and letters allow humans to easily remember whereas IP addresses are much more difficult to remember as they are in 4 sets of 8-bit numbers.

Using an example - explain where the domain name appears in a website address

A simple example is in the URL:
https://westherts.itslearning.com/ContentArea/ContentArea.aspx?LocationID=952&LocationType=1. In this example, the domain name would be https://westherts.itslearning.com

What must be considered when choosing a domain name?

Using keywords, keeping it short, avoiding hyphens and being memorable is what is considered when thinking of a domain name as It's easier to remember.

Brief timeline of the internet.

1965 - Two computers at MIT can communicate with one a another using packet switching. 

1974 - The first internet service provider called Telenet makes a commericial version of ARPANET.

1983 - DNS establishes the .edu, .gov, .com, .org, for naming websites.

1998 - The google search engine is born and changes the way users interact with the internet.
