WW1

This historical event WW1 really influenced the story for two reasons is Alek is the prince in Austria and Deryn is disguised as a boy to get in the British air force since women aren't allowed to join. WW1 started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. He was assassinated by the Black hand a secret Serbian military society. That assassination triggered the start of WW1. The two sides are the Allies and the Central Powers, the allies had France, Great Britain, Italy, Russia, and later on the United States joined World War 1. The Central Powers had Austria, Germany, Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. In the end the Allies won the war. 

The WW1 Christmas truce

Five months in to the  WW1 there was an unofficial truce on Christmas day in No-man's land. During the truce the soldiers played Soccer/Football in other countries the Germans won that Soccer/ Football, traded cigars, and retrieved bodies of fallen comrades. They also, sang Christmas carols to each other. This never happened again in any war because, it was considered an act of treason. The truce ended when two German snipers killed two British soldiers.
