you will have a class discussion on the purpose of music videos with illustrations. TAKE NOTES from class discussion and show your understanding using subject terminology correctly on your blog page. upload your brainstorming map to this task.

you must consider the following points.

-promotional benefits of the song or album

-purpose of the music video to artist or group

-how does the music video generate money for the record company

-extention of income-release of the music video, advertising.

-producers statergies ie youtube, vevo, social networking

-synergy- promotion for the film industry

promotional, this attracts a wider audience to buy there album, they do this by producing a very mainstream genre at the time, however the song that is produced could be completely different to the music on the album.an example of this would be the Notorious B.I.G when the album Ready to Die came out. he made a track called Juicy, this was to grab the audiences attention in oder to promote his album.

purpose, this can be done for charity in order for people to buy the song and the money goes to the charity the song is about/ made for. and example of this is band aid "do they know its christmas". this song has made a lot of money for there charity. however there are other was to make money and one was is through youtube via adverts. advertiser will pay the song owner so that they use there advert at the start of the video.

extension of income- this can be done in many ways, one for example is the name of the song itself, (Migos-Versace, Ace Hood- i woke up in a new buggati) another way would be to show an artist wearing / using the product an example of this would be "Stormzy-Shut up" which features Adidas and "Ty Dollar Sign - Or Nah?" which features the famous beats pill at the begging in of the video.

producers strategies. often a producer will reach out to social media sites in order to promote the advert. a good example of this would be youtube, this is because even some of the most famous artists that are around now were discovered on youtube , therefore if people can be found of youtube this means you have a huge audience to advertise to.

synergy- this is where a song is made for a film/ tv show, an example of this would be the Charlie Puth song see you again made for the final fast and furious seven. often film makers will contact artist in order to make a song for an upcoming film. this is so that a connection is made and when you hear the song you want to see the film.

Michael Jackson- Billie jean

not only being one of the highest sellers of singles in history, this song and video influenced most of the music produced to date. this is the music video that finally took down the racist owners of mtg that did not want to play any videos featuring black performers. the purpose of the video was to tell the story of a grouped that micheal encountered that claimed to be carrying his or one of the jackson brothers baby. it was also to boost Jacksons carrer however he didn't realise it would catapult him to becoming the "king of pop" . Jacksons billie jean also helped advertise his album thriller which eventually became the biggest selling album of all time. the only place you can really find this video is youtube and the official Michael jackson website. the total amount of sales went though the roof selling an incredible 51-65 million copies .

The Weeknd - the hills is the next song i will be looking at, i feel that the purpose of this song was to promote his album "beauty behind the madness". i also feel the purpose of the music video, was the artist battling against difficult times, this is shown by the weekend crawling out of a flaming car in which at the end of the video he ends up in a room that is lit red. the extension of the album is an example of synergy because it was to promote the film 50 shades of grey, the film which ended up being nominated for a golden trailer award. the album was released on may 27th and by the 31st he had already had 5.2 million streams and grossed 109,000 downloads.

this is chuck berry- maybellene made in 1955, this could be one of the first music videos around at the time, the artist image was very much the mainstream fashion back then, a classic suit and the, this however makes him seem classy and professional. as you can see the quality of the music video isn't the greets. this is because of televisions of first being around and broadcasting didn't have the strongest signal.the video has no fancy editing but only jump cuts from one camera to another, there are also no exact location or special effects. this is because the artist is literally just performing to a huge crowd.

the music itself in the 1950s was very much the era of rock and roll, i also feel that this song ties in well with the era considering this genre dominated the charts so much. however R&B really influenced the rock music back in the 50s. this was also the era of the one and only Elvis Presley who dominated and influenced the world with his music. he also introduced the fashion sense of rockers, this meant Motorcycles and Leather jackets with slick back hair, which elvis had for a number of years.

there are a fare few shots but they are very basic close ups of his face or a long shot of the whole band, this was to keep it simple when it came to editing because there was no fancy cgi it was littereallly cut and stick in 1950.

as you can see there are obvious jump cuts that are so sharp, however they do go in time with the music video. the main style of the video is fairly standard and in black and white, these were to only tv shows formats available.

Jimi Hendrix- Purple Haze This song was named after a strand of Cannabis, which as we know was strongly used throughout the 60s along with other drugs such as LSD, Jimi lived like this for his lifestyle in which he used to set trends with the clothes he wore and in the style in which he sang. Hendirx also used to indulge in psychedelic drugs before he performed on stage, this used to enable him to really connect with the music the purpose of this music video was to promote Hendrix through the use of him displaying his skills on guitar and with his vocals on the microphone.

during the 1960s we were introduced to bands like The Beatles and The rolling stones, these were two of the most influential bands of the time for fashion and music, these two bands laid down the paving stones for most modern rock music today. the rolling stones were very influential with there famous tounge logo. this is still seen in todays world from Tshirts to even artwork.

i feel that the quality of the footage was much better as you can see there are no marks or scratches that pop up, you can also notice its a lot more fluent in the way that the tape rolls, its not jumpy at all and can be considered a lot more of a music video style compared to Chuck Berrys- maybellene.

the types of shots that are used throughout the music video are not faded and no fancy transitions are used, it is simply just cut, however i feel that this works very well due to it being in time to the rhythm of the guitar. the editing techniques used for this would have litterally been cutting the tape, and sticking it to another piece causing the camera location and zoom to change.

Stealers wheel- Stuck in the middle with you, this band was huge during the seventies with the styles in which they performed, here you can see one of the first form of music videos. the styles of artist stayed similar to those from the sixties, with flare trouser, long hair and a beard/moustache. some artist took part in enjoying psycadelics to inspire there music and performances.

during the 70s a lot of music shifted toward disco music, however rock played a huge part in the western region of music, having said that punk rock played a huge parts in the chart with it thriving forward throughout the century. during the 70s the jacksons were introduced, and as we know now nearly all the members of the jackson5 were successful.

as you can see the music video now has colour and much better video quality, this helped the music era as it pushed sales as the performances looked more appealing to the eye when televised. the music video itself features elements from the sixties but however has progressed a huge step forward as even the introduction shot was a pan. this also features shots of the camera cutting away from what seems to be them performing to random clowns at a dinner table, this was a step in the right direction toward making more successful music videos.

as from what the eyes can see, not special effects were used apart from make up, however this would have been done in the pre-production before the video was filmed

aha- take on me .during the 1980s the music video scene was very much established, this meant that more music videos are a lot more crazier with ideas (as you can see from this music video) i feel that the artist image was very casual rather than the more flamboyant side of the 80s with all the illuminous clothing.

due to dance music going out of fashion in the early years of the 80s a nw era of music arose such as post disco, italo disco, and dance pop. however the Rock seen carried on being enjoyed by millions in which another genre of rock was born. Thrash Metal, however this was brought up into the underground scene but wasn't made popular until later on in the 80s, some of the famously born thrash metal bands include Metallica and Slayer. the 80s was also recognised for its increased use in digital recordings, synth pop and electronic was also enjoyed for its non traditional instruments. this drew in peoples attention in the same way it does today.

throughout the use of the 1980s instruments and the way songs were edited was a huge pushed due to the amount of new sounds and genres emerging people came up with numerous ways to record in edit, some methods we even use today.

i feel the music video had tons of different camera angles, mainly using pan shots and zooms, i feel that the quality of the video is improving throughout the years, this is obvious tho as technology evolves throughout the years the quality so will the quality. i feel that the editing in this music video is excellent, it features smooth transitions and an unrealistic twist when a comic comes to life. this really grabs your attention as it was really abnormal. for this affect they would have used a green screen and then would have edited the video on some form of computer.

The Notorious B.I.G- juicy

This music videos era was where Rap music was finally being played on the radio alongside other rappers like Tupac and Snoop Dogg. i felt that Biggie was a huge inspiration to how certain people dressed, this was when Gangster rap and hip hop changed fashion to even how some people dress today, not only did rap music and especially Biggie change the way people dressed, he also changed the way people thought about the law, and what they was doing with there life.

the 90s was famous for its talent of Hip Hop, R&B and Rap it became to be very successful and popular throughout the decade. however like the 80s Rock was still a high demand genre even more types of rock started being produced such as grunge, indie and even alternative rock. but if we take into account the world a large part of it started to enjoy the more Electronic side Including Drum and bass and even Garage. throughout this time period everyone in London and even throughout England wanted to be an MC (Microphone Controller) this you could say was a huge trend set.

i feel that the artist in the video tried to show how he has come from rags to riches, you can see this when he is standing on a door step in brooklyn wearing a basketball jersey, jeans and timberlands however if you look when he is in a nice mansion he is has changed the outfit to a completely white suit.

the types of shots used are excellent with the lyrics. this is because it completely ties in in with what he is expressing with what he is saying in his lyrics. the editing in tho video i thought was done very well which featured slow motions. after looking at videos from the 90s this is the only one i could find that even feature any form of slow motion.

for this part i have decided to use Kanye West's "heartless" this is because he has used animation throughout the entire video. this has mainly pros and little cons. this is because the actual artist will have to do nothing for the music video (unless they was to animate it themselves) as they would usually hire graphic designers, artists and even animators to create the music video. this means there can be no mistakes and can also create a very appealing music video.

in this style of music video, it can be very confusing. this is because the audience wants you to interpret whatever you want about the music, usually some have meanings that are deeper than most think and sometimes can correspond to the lyrics. in this case they speak about death (Timberlake and T.I) in which the camera will pan and show an empty dessert plain with cloudy skys. in my opinion the artist wants you to imagine how he his feeling about trying to fins himself.

i feel that this music video by JME corresponds to the lyrics, this is because when a certain lyric is said, the artist will perform the action that was said in the song. i feel that the camera angles are very basic, this is because there is only one type of shot. however this shot is a low shot that looks up at the artist. this helps set a mis en scene of intimidation and power. this is also because the artists are in all black with a dark background. there are a few cuts in the video including wipes and just standard jump cuts, i feel that this adds affect so that your not seeing the same cut over and over again. there is only one type of light in the video, and we see it occur twice, i feel that this is used to create a certain lighting within the room to help with the mis en scene. i have found the only sound throughout the song is the music video itself, in my opinion i feel that adding in any sound affects i would have spoilt the song and video. a number of props are used in this music video, this is to emphasise the lyrics and therefore add a slight comedic side to a serious video for example we hear the lyric "Wah the bloodclart, I'm back the don gorgon" through the use of a Jamaican slang, wee see JME walk in shot wearing a Rastafarian wig. there were hardly any costumes throughout the video only urban/street wear, however there is one part in which someone is dressed in an iron man costume, this i feel was to again cause comedic affect, i also feel that he has used techniques so that people pay attention to the complexity of the lyrics. the colours used in the video are mainly black, i feel this is to show the grittyness of the music, this is because grime is associated with dark colours and is normally about the rough estates of east London or what crimes the artist has committed.

i feel that this music video is about how a relationship can lead to violence and depression, this is displayed with a clone of eminem on the screen. One of which Is happy and the other however is bitter and angry. During the video we see a use of symbolism with a gun in her back pocket, I feel that this means you can never fully trust anybody as they will always have the power to hurt you. We also see a the mid shot of eminem walking down a dark road to which the camera cuts to a lone wolf, I think that this is meant show that the artist is alone and has no one. Hence wolfs always appear in packs. I think that the use of very dark clothing and heavy use of a smoke matchine during the empty road, this creates a mise en scene of depression and in some opinions death. This is because people suffering with things such as depression will usually relate the illness to isolation and darkness. During the video there we're jump cuts where the artist is going throught the strangers/ girlfriends phone. This creates a tension to where you question if he will be caught or not. I feel this is a good technique used by directors to keep the audiences eyes fixed on the screen. The lighting in the video is very little. Again I feel that this helps set a dull yet interesting mood. In my opinion it is because you question if it is set in reality or not. As in real life I think everything would be a lot more lit up. Having said this I think it is done for a reason on order to help with the mise en scene. The only sound used in the video which Is easily recognised is the gunshot. This is used to in my opinion to display a feeling of how it feels when you have been given bad news or somthing bad has happened, purely because I think the sound itself is so sharp. During the video no costumes we're used however dark/ dull clothing was used to portray the message of depression and isolation as I have previously talked about. Whilst the video only shows one colour through-out (black/greys) I felt one did stand out, the red on the door in the motel. I think this was no coincidence as Eminem proceeds to throw his lover to the ground and strangle her therefore I feel that the red on the door symbolises evil and death.

For this section I have decided to use the video "L$D" by A$AP Rocky. This is because of its trippy features witch lure you in throughout the video. I think the camera shots in this video are very creative, this is because the camera isn't just put on a tripod at a certain angle. It is spun, moved and in some cases it even seemed warped. However we see a lot of pan shots and zooms as the video progresses. The mise en scene for this video is almost to make you wonder if there is not her meaning, this is because whenever the artist touches the girl, the on screen visuals begin to turn multicoloured, warped and even brightened, therefore I feel that it is meant to be seen that the female is his drug and gets a high whenever he is with her. The editing used through the video is excellent. This is because seamless edits are used, however they are not just normal edit as the camera will go through a table and a different location will be on screen. I think this works excellently with this video as it gives it a psychedelic affect. The use of lighting used in the video is mainly through the street signs. However they seem to have been brightened a lot more. I feel that this works very well because it seems a lot more interesting compared to just a normal light. I also feel that it works very well with the music as it creates a relaxed mood. The only sound that appears through the video is the song, however in one part of the video we can see the song changes, I think this could be a hint as to another up coming song or a link to a previous song the artist has produced before because this extract isn't in the original. No props were used in this video apart from the cannabis and lighter in his hand at the start of this video. I think that having no props works well due to it keeping the video simple yet professional. There are also no costumes in the music video because the artist thinks highly of his fashion. I also feel as though it gives you more of an insight of how the artist looks on a day to day basis. The colour through the the video changes constantly. This I feel isn't to set a mood but just to enhance the psychedelic affects it has on the viewer. It also keeps the viewers eyes on the screen and leaves you in a trance as it is completely out of the normal.

For this music video I have decided to use "like toy soldiers" by eminem. This is because the song is about his best friend Deshaun who was shot four times. Deshaun also was another rapper as well as a group member of D12. I feel that the camera shots used in the videos were main,y close ups of the artists face, I think that this was done to really show the emotion that went into writing the song. However through the video we see other shots such as mid shots and long shots used. The mise en scene is as if you are in the hospital with them, this is through the use of the props because of the hospital gurney and medical equipment surrounding the deceased rapper. The editing is very complex in the video as we see jump cuts and also fades. During the video we also see some animation in which the background doesn't look real. I feel the editing is very good as no shots are over repeated and keeps a fresh feel to the video which enables the viewer to keep watching without getting bored. The lighting for the video I feel is very lit on the artist but is dull in the background. This in my opinion helps to guide the audiences attention and therefore keeps you focused on the videos main priorities it also enables you to see the video of how the director wanted it to look. There are no sounds to this music video apart from the two children talking at the begging of the song. I feel this is the best way to add extra sounds because that way it dos the ruin the song itself or the music video for that matter. The props and costumes used for this video are where Deshaun is lying in the hospital bed being treated by doctors, however outside in the hallway we see another stand containing medical equipment (which eminem flips) . For the music video I feel that a lot of greys whites and blacks where used for the making of the video in order to set a low mood. However I feel that this is a great technique because it really brings out the employees ion and feeling to the viewers and also gives you an insight of how the artist felt at this time.

For this technique I have chosen to use Without me by Eminem. This I feel was a good choice due to the consideration put into the music video. A number of long shots, close ups and even mid shots were used to create the video. This giving an audience a real insight to the surroundings of the performer himself.

An excellent example of chroma key was featured in the song "Can't we go back" by he Jackalopes. you can see this technique is even in the thumbnail of the music video. I think that this technique could be great to use, this is because we rarely see any music videos featuring this technique nowadays. I think that this is an advantage because people are attracted to something that it's not usually seen in modern videos
