Biography - Marianne Moore was an avid poet, resulting in her writing this poem almost to justify why poetry is a good thing.

Figurative Language - "Imaginary gardens with real toads in them," is an example of a metaphor that represents that poetry should include real life.

Summary - In this poem, Marianne Moore explains why some people like poetry and some dislike it. She argues why poetry is good by stating that no one likes business documents or school books, but they are an essential part of life. Poetry can make people feel emotions and expand their understanding, making it important.

Free Verse and organized strangely

Tone/Mood - The tone or mood is explanatory as she seeks to explain why poetry is important

The Crowd at the Ball Game

Question 1 (Biography Connection): This poem connects to William Carlos Williams bio because of his connections to Modernism and Imagism. The poem connects to Modernism because it is depicting an everyday scene, the ball game, and it connects to the Imagist movement because he uses concise language and as few words as possible.

Question 2 (Literary Devices): The author uses metaphor by saying the crowd is venomous. He also uses personification, he treats the crowd as if it were one being.

Question 3 (Summary):

Literal Summary: A crowd is swaying to the thrill of a ball game.

Figurative Summary: The author is warning against the powers of the group, he talks about how crowds can be a good thing, like at a ball game where everyone is having fun, but groups can also be bad, such as during things like the Inquisition where groups were bad and violent.

Question 4 (Rhyme): It is a free-verse poem.

Question 5 (Tone): The mood is kind of dark and condemning. He is warning against the powers a group can have over individuals. It starts out in a cheerful setting but gets darker over time, lending to a dreary overall tone.
