Public domain is a piece that you don't have to ask the owner for permission to use but you still have to site them. You can use a part of a song for a song and that is public domain but you cannot use the whole song without asking for permission.

Copyright is when somebody's creation is protected and they get to decide if they want someone to use it. So a passage that you read on a reading test, the person that made the test has to ask for permission because it has copyright laws on it. But when using your own work you can do whatever with it.

If you want to use somebody else's creation and it isn't public domain you first have to ask far permission. Then you will have to pay if It's necessary. After that you need to make sure you give credit to the person who created it. If you don't' do that you could get in some trouble and it just not polite to steal someones work.

Piracy is taking someone else's work for yourself and not giving them any type of credit for their work. If you copy and paste and do not site the source that is piracy. If you rearrange the words and site the source then that is true courtesy,
