John Proctor is to blame for him and Elizabeth´s marital problems. The reason being that Elizabeth´s suspicion towards John, and her hostility, were completely justified, as John had been cheating on her with Abigail. John´s retaliation after Elizabeth had approached him had only made things worse, since not only had she caught him in a lie, when John let it slip that he had been alone with her, after telling her that Abigail was with a crowd (Miller 57). John continues to become aggressive and angry, clearly from panic (Miller 59). This is why John is the cause of their marital problems, because he´s a dirty lying cheater.

Elizabeth and John Proctor have a lot of marital problems. This is because of John Proctor. John Proctor cheated on Elizabeth with Abigail. Since this event, Elizabeth and John have been arguing a lot. This is expected to happen. This is expected to happen because if you cheat on someone, you are forever losing the trust of the other person. You can never trust them again, if they cheat once, they will do it again. Elizabeth Proctor has every right to be very upset and angry with John Proctor because of what he did, because what he did was unforgivable.

The Proctor’s have a very broken relationship and for this, John is to blame. “I think you must tell him John”(Miller 68). Elizabeth here is trying to persuade her husband to tell reverend Hale of his knowledge that he was told by Abigail Williams. John and Abigail have shall I say a special relationship, due to an affair the two had with one another. “I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near! Or did I dream that? It’s she put me out, you cannot pretend it were you. I saw your face when she put me out, and you loved me then and you do now!”(Miller 22). John had intimate relations with Abigail Williams which lead to the trouble in his marriage. John is torn however now due to his actions, he must win Elizabeth’s trust back and continue to discourage Abigail's’ hope of a future between the two of them. Elizabeth: “Then why do you anger me when I bid you break it?” John: “Because it speaks deceit, and I am honest! But I’ll plead no more! I see now your spirit twists around the single error of my life, and I will never tear it free!” (Miller 62). John seems as though he wants to make things right within his marriage when discouraging Abigail, although does not seem sorrowful enough for his actions to plead for Elizabeth’s forgiveness. In conclusion, due to John’s past and present actions he is to blame for the troubles within his marriage to Elizabeth.

John’s and Elizabeth’s relationship is broken, dysfunctional, and untrustful and Elizabeth is to blame for it. Their marriage is broken because they both see things differently. Like when Elizabeth says “You cannot keep it, John,”(Miller 53). This show that he wanted to keep his secret and she doesn’t. Their relationship is also very dysfunctional because they don’t believe one another. When Elizabeth doubt Proctor about Abigail John says “You doubt me yet… You will not judge me anymore Elizabeth. I have good reason to think before I charge fraud on Abigail,”(Miller 54). This shows that she is not taking his word and this may show that Elizabeth is to blame for the marital problems because he does trust her Eocene to tell her anything. Like when she said “You were alone with her?”(Miller 53). This show that Elizabeth does not trust him with other people. This shows that Elizabeth and John marriage is very dysfunctional, broken and untrusted and that Elizabeth is to blame for it.

The relationship between John and Elizabeth Proctor is highly dull, illustrating the significant tension remaining in the relationship since Proctor's affair with Abigail Williams. " I would go to Salem now, John - let you go tonight. Proctor: I’ll think on it. Elizabeth, with her courage now: You cannot keep it, John, Proctor, angering: I know I cannot keep it. I say I will think on it!" (Miller 53). Elizabeth Proctor is intensely suspicious of her husband, worrying when he arrives at home late for dinner and adopting a superior tone when her husband admits that he was momentarily alone with Abigail Williams. Miller establishes Elizabeth Proctor as a morally upright woman, respectable and dignified, yet with an air of superiority that renders her frigid and distant. "Oh, the noose, the noose is up! Proctor: There’ll be no noose. Elizabeth: She wants me dead. I knew all week it would come to this! "(Miller 60). Proctor feels that Elizabeth has made her home into a repressive atmosphere, continually punishing her husband for his wrongdoing. Still, if Elizabeth adopts a tone of moral superiority it is because she is the superior of her contemporaries, with an unwavering belief in the capability of persons to remain moral. Miller creates an atmosphere of guilt within the Proctor household that mirrors the similar conditions within larger Puritan society."(Then go and tell her she’s a whore. Whatever promise she may sense
- break it, John, break it! "(Miller 62). Proctor has expressed contrition for his infidelity and asked for forgiveness, yet there is no sense of catharsis within his marriage nor ability for full reconciliation. The Proctor marriage is stagnant and stifling, as the fact of John's adultery lingers in every conversation like a giant white elephant. Miller demonstrates this, in particular, when Proctor is unable to recall the commandment against adultery – it is a moment of humor, but it also reflects the crisis of the Proctor marriage. Miller seems to indicate that, like the rest of their Puritan society, the Proctors need an outlet to expiate John's sins and without this means for redemption they are committed to a perpetual obsession with past infidelity.

This also shows to me that she refuses to let go and heal from old situations and continues to prolong the pain she dwells in. This causes over excessive arguing which leads to the relationship being unsteady as I said before and also seems to prove the point that both play a part in creating the marital problems or in this case keeping them going. As you can see the relationship is unsteady both are responsible for the marital problems.

Elizabeth and John Proctors relationship is crumbling, messy, chaotic. When we see John and Elizabeth talking you can see the tension, “Elizabeth- she doesn’t want friction and yet she must: ‘You come so late I thought you’d be gone to Salem this afternoon’... Proctor- he knows what she means: ‘I thought better of it since’” (Miller 51). Later they have a conversation about the main reason there is tension between them. John met Abigail alone which cause Elizabeth distress because of the past affair John and Abigail had together (Miller 53). A finale statement that Elizabeth and johns relationship is in havoc is when Elizabeth says, “She has an arrow in you yet, John Proctor, and you know it well!’ (Miller 62). When she says this she is referring to cupids arrow and that john has fallen for Abigail. One can say that this is John’s fault for the affair with Abigail, however that’s not the only problem. John has time and time again apologized and he says that he was nothing but to her for the past 7 months, that's a long time to not forgive someone, I’m not saying this isn’t John’s fault but it is also Elizabeth’s fault. This whole relationship is messy and both partners fault.

The relationship between John and Elizabeth Proctor is a very unstable one. They have gotten to the point where they can no longer trust each other. I personally believe that they are both equally to blame for the marital problems. For example, John says "she told it to me in a room alone - I have no proof for it"(Miller 53). Here he is referring to when he was alone with Abigail, but he had previously told Elizabeth that they were in a crowd of people. This causes Elizabeth to be very upset. John proctor also has a very bad temper and gets mad easily. An example of this is "Oh, Elizabeth, your justice would freeze beer!"(Miller 55). John said that when he got bitter when Elizabeth was trying to reason with him. Elizabeth is also very suspicious, which annoys John very much. For example

Elizabeth Proctor is strong, brave, forgiving but she is also suspicious. She shows that she is suspicious when she says “John have you ever shown her some what of contempt? She cannot pass you in the church but you will blush” (Miller 55). She is a brave and strong women because in the time period this takes place, you can not leave your husband. Women could not own land, so she had no other choice but to be brave and stay with John (Miller). She shows she is forgiving when she tells John, ¨I do not judge you… i never thought you but a good man, John¨ (Miller 55). This shows us that she is forgiving because even though he gave her every reason to hate him, she says never thought badly of him. Elizabeth proves to be a strong, brave, forgiving, but also suspicious character.

Elizabeth and John Proctor have a lot of marital problems. This is because of John Proctor. John Proctor cheated on Elizabeth with Abigail. Since this event, Elizabeth and John have been arguing a lot (Miller 64). This is expected to happen. This is expected to happen because if you cheat on someone, you are forever losing the trust of the other person (Miller 58). You can never trust them again, if they cheat once, they will do it again. Elizabeth Proctor has every right to be very upset and angry with John Proctor because of what he did, because what he did was unforgivable. Although he knows what he did was wrong, when he says, “I may blush for my sin¨ he still can never be forgiven (Miller 65). In conclusion, John and Elizabeth Proctor have marital problems.

The Relationship between John and Elizabeth Proctor is broken and fractured because John had an affair with Abigail, but he still continues to defend her. John has secret meetings with Abigail alone about witchcraft and he still keeps these meetings from Elizabeth (Miller 53). "I have reason to think before I charge fraud on Abigail (Miller 54). Lastly, John manipulates Elizabeth and says that he does not tolerate her being suspicious. John knows what he did was wrong but he turns around and blames Elizabeth because she has no reason to be upset. "Spare me! You forget nothin’ and forgive nothin’.." (Miller 54). Elizabeth has the right to be upset with John and she has the right to choose whether to forgive him or not. John is the one who has caused their marital problems.

Elizabeth Proctor’s character traits are very scattered. She mixes up her emotions depending on the situation. Three word to describe Elizabeth are caring, nosy, and determined. Throughout act two Elizabeth shows her ways towards all characters. For example, in act two, Elizabeth says “Pray God. It hurt my heart to strip her, poor rabbit” (Miller 50). This shows that no matter how small the circumstance is, Elizabeth has a heart and cares for anyone and anything, even if it’s just a rabbit. On the other hand, a different example of Elizabeth’s behavior is “You were alone with her” (Miller 53)? Elizabeth shows a feeling of jealousy for Proctor being with Abigail alone for some time. This brings out a whole new side of her and she gets very angry because she does not want to lose her husband or be tried in Court due to Abigail. And lastly, Elizabeth has a determined, feisty side to her as well. She says “Spoke or silent, a promise is surely made. And she may dote on it now - I am sure she does - and thinks to kill me, then to take my place” (Miller 61). She says this because she knows what Abigail is up to and she knows that most people want her gone. Overall, Elizabeth continues to fight for her life and husband and does not let anyone’s words get to her personally.

The spouse in the Proctor family who is more to blame for the marital problems between the Proctors is John . John is mostly to blame because he has commit adultery and slept with the family's servant girl,Abigail. Although she is described in the book as “... Abigail Williams, seventeen, enters - a strikingly beautiful girl, an orphan, with an endless capacity for disassembling.” (Miller,10) this is no excuse for committing this sin. During this time period men could get in trouble for committing lechery which is defined as “excessive or offensive sexual desire; lustfulness” this is proved on page 80 “Mary Warren: She’ll kill me for saying’ that! Proctor continues toward her. Abby’ll charge lechery on you, Mr. Proctor! “ (Miller,80). Another statement of proof toward the statement of John Proctor being the problem is he lies to his wife. On page 54 the book speaks on how he has lied “Elizabeth: You were alone with her? Proctor, stubbornly: For a moment alone, aye. Elizabeth: Why, then, it is not as you told me. “ (Miller,54).The worst part about John Proctor lying is he lied about a following event that could have got him in trouble in the first place. Although John Proctor did apologize to his wife it is clarified in the book that he doesn't mean this apology. The reason it is clearly didn't mean this apology is if he truly meant the apology he would do everything in his power to stay away from the person who tempted him. The last piece of evidence to prove John is to do with the marital problem is when John was asked to recite the ten commandments of the bible the only commandment that he forgot to say was adultery and how it is a sin.If John Proctor felt sorry he would know what he did was wrong and incorrect and remember it was a sin.
