We have seen so many devastating events happen because of our ignorant pollution. We are suffering harsher droughts, flooding, natural disasters, burning of forests, natural disasters, and many more. Yet, people underestimate the change that we can bring significant change rather than relying on corporations to do that for us. We are able to minimise the production of plastics if we turn to other alternatives that function the same way, yet produced in a greener way. We are also the key stakeholder to manipulate and change the way we carry out daily activities to reduce global warming. And finally, no one should be an exception because ultimately, we are still living on the same planet.
First up, we are able to manipulate the market and minimise production of harmful materials through supply and demand. The market works in a very simple way. Whenever you pay for a product, the money is being used to create more products because the company assumes that there is a demand for their product and they need to produce more. If we are going to keep purchasing and using plastics, these harmful materials will just keep being mass produced and developed at such a fast rate that in 4 billion years, even the most persevering and adaptable organism will be dead. We are essentially bringing all living organisms on earth to mass extinction because of this demand for plastics. It is unnecessary to be using too much plastics. Countries like Japan where products are being wrapped in 4 layers of plastic is unnecessary and there is a simple solution to this. We can just use a reusable container or fabric bag to carry our products rather than feeding onto the demand for plastic. If we make this simple change, there will no longer be a need to use excessive amounts of plastic and the supply chain will decrease.
Furthermore, we need to understand that we cannot simply just force corporations to use lesser plastics. We need to lower the need for these products due to overpopulation. We cannot just stop the supply of goods if we have a continuous growing population. It will simply put more people from third world countries to suffer because we are blindly cutting off supplies. . There will be a lower demand for basic amenities that people need and this means that corporations no longer have a need to overly produce these harmful products to the environment. We are preventing people, animals, and the world from suffering.
Lastly, no one should have the right to neglect their individual responsibility to save our planet. Even if they are from a poor country, they have mental disabilities for example. They should not be ignoring our cause. We are ultimately still living in the same world and we all have a part to play. For example, these poor people can minimise the amount of babies they have as they cannot support them either way. Even if people have disabilities, they still can do something simple like using reusable bags when purchasing goods. Or using products that are more environmentally friendly. Prevent using straws and simply drink from the cup. Use ceramic cups instead of plastic ones. These are all very manageable things to do and it is actually more beneficial to not only society, but the earth. You are saving money by not buying unnecessary one-time usage items when you use a reusable item.
