Cultural Responsiveness

A lot of my clients have made the important first step to adopt HQ curriculum that teaches foundational skills in a systematic, explicit way AND pairs it with complex text. This complex text, however, is not always culturally responsive to the communities present in that classroom and, thus, I think an ongoing challenge is how to use the texts in the curriculum while also being responsive to all students. I appreciated the part of the course that provided resources into how to look at a text and break it down to add in more cultural responsiveness but I think this is a difficult skill we need to provide a lot of support on to clients.

Both of my projects right now center on foundational skills and thus the deep looking into Scarborough's rope and the science of reading particularly resonated with me. These are learnings I will bring to my clients to get buy-in and explain the shifts that we must make in classrooms in order for strong literacy instruction to be happening.

Love the revision to the overarching purpose and vision of literacy. Much more humanizing than the initial one. I might adjust the writing one to include something about encoding and its relationship to decoding...I am also thinking about how to center thinkers and researchers of color more in our work. I am wondering if the vision, or the course itself, is place to do that (Alfred Tatum, Zaretta Hammond, Ghouldy Mohammad...)

I see this Vision of Excellent Instruction in ELA is in a state of drafting, and that it builds upon and enhances the strong VOI that was presented in the previous document shared in the course. The four components to literacy instruction resonate with me, as they provide a roadmap for the effective activation and enactment of HQIM. The sections of the vision that call for the attention to student identity and background is critical, particularly as it may be represented and called out in HQIM. The concept of presenting "windows and mirrors" resonates with me, as students are able to contextualize themselves within a larger framework of literature, content, and ideas.

Same problem of practice as always :) bringing this vision to life while working with clients who have adopted curriculum that isn't always hitting the marker. also, building buy-in through practice and not over-explaining the same evidence.

The Simple View of Reading, Scarborough's Rope and the Six Principles related to The Writing Revolution resonates with me the most. Dedicated time to exploring content that supports clients with acknowledging and implementing these principles is a requested adjustment.

My primary question is about how to access the modules even though I have completed the course? I have not been able to find my way back into the course after I moved through all of the modules.
