Candombe, Payada, Milonga and Tango.

Candombe is a historical dance that is related to the arrival of the African slaves; they kept the traditional dance and continued it in Uruguay, usually this dance is done in the streets like a parade. This dance also features two different drums chico, repique and piano(a soft playing drum).

Payada is a poetic musical dance that was formed by gauchos (Men that worked in the country side of Uruguay and Argentina also known as cowboys), their way of life paid great importance to their culture of music, dance and poetry. It is one of the first traditional style dance, from which milonga and tango were later created. This dance takes place in the payada(which is the main square of the town) which then two payadores would preform a verbal duel, with guitars, they would both then sing verses that established a poetic dialogue with each other.

The Milonga dance incorporated many elements of the payada dance but with African rhythms, quite simuler to cnadombe, this would all later integrate into tango, the styles of guitar and the themes of the songs would cneter around the life of a guachos. The main difference between Uruguayan and Argentinian milonga is that the Argentinian doesn’t incorporate African rhythms so blatanly, as it didn’t have any influence from the Uruguayan candombe.

Tango is a music and dance style that originated in the port cities of Montevideo and Buenos Aires.Its musical origins is a entierly new fusion and mix of African (candombe), Latin American (milonga), and European influences. The lyrics of these songs are usually about love, ther also include a lot of slang that was created in the working class. Nowadays, tango is iconic to the entireraty of Uruguay, not just the working class like it used to be, and can be danced in special tango clubs and bars, and seen in shows.
