I think that moneys affect on happiness is well put in this article. People like the things that money can do and it takes out the stresses of everyday life allowing people to enjoy the people that they are around. I believe that people just want to live an easy and relaxed life. Still, some people that are extremely wealthy are not happy and I think that is because a little bit of some stress can be enjoyably and bring out the best in people or else life is too easy and it can get boring and redundant. Therefore, I believe that people should only have a certain amount of control on their life and the stresses in it because without it they wouldn't be the person that they are striving to be.

This video shows varying things that make people happy but I think it was interesting how older people seemed to be happy by bigger things like family and realized that their time was almost done so they reflected on their past and present vs. focusing on the future. While kids were happier by smaller things. This is seen in The Old Man and the Sea where Santiago finds enjoyment in fishing even if he doesn't "win" (catch a fish) because he realizes that he can't always win in life. While in The Catcher in the Rye Holden is solely focused on an unrealistic goal where he keeps all children innocent. However, he doesn't yet realize that he can't control everything in his life.

The Old Man, Santiago, is solely happy by a mere thing in life because he has very little. Just seeing the little boy grow up right and catching fish makes him enjoy his life. I feel like this is because of his age which shows him that he doesn't have much time left so he is focused on certain things in life that he enjoys and also he is unlucky so he feels happy through little success.

Love keeps people happy because it is constant while being wealthy by winning the lottery, for example, will only last for a couple of years. This is because the money will eventually be lost in a couple of years or a person will become bored while consistent love removes any insecurity that an individual may feel allowing them to be constantly happy. Also, naturally, as humans we like to socialize and feel intimacy with others. This directly applies to Gatsby because Gatsby gets a feeling form love from Daisy but once she starts to lean towards Tom again, he loses all his happiness because she knows that no one truly and constantly loves him.

When her family is happy and other people around her are happy and laughing. She likes to see other people succeed as well because she feels happy when they work hard and get rewarded for that hard work. She also finds happiness looking at nature because its pure and beautiful. Also, she finds it beautiful and enjoys the birds singing because she finds it peaceful and enjoys the harmony. Likewise, she finds happiness in gardening because she views at as her own success. that is because she sees them almost as her own kids growing and blossoming. Overall, this goes back to the contagiousness of happiness and how in general human beings like to see others succeed along side themselves. I think that it is interesting that she wants to see her "own" things succeed (her kids and plants) because I believe it gives her a sense of pride that something that she controlled was successful. I think that pride is a big reason why people act like they do and work to achieve the goals they have set out for themselves.

Steve Jobs brings up some very interesting points in his speech to the Stanford graduates. He points out that his belief in what he does and enjoyment in it brought him to the happiness and successful position he is in today. He states that he sacrificed a lifestyle he wanted to be happy and do the things that he loved. However, personally, I think that very few people are able/willing to give up everything for one dream when they could live easily but not enjoy what they do. Similarly, in The Great Gatsby, Gatsby devotes his life to Daisy and gives it his all to be with her so he can live with the result of not being able to get her since he tried his hardest.

A feeling of autonomy in one's life leads to happiness. I think this relates to stress because if someone controls their life and what happens then they will have nothing bad to worry about. For example, one may be upset about a breakup or work troubles but those are problems that can't be controlled while if you are in control of your life then you choose what happens and what you do. Similarly, in The House on Mango Street, Esperanza struggles to find her own self identity because she doesn't have control over her life like many people in her neighborhood. This is something that makes her sad knowing that she could end up like one of the people she sees struggling everyday.
