Why does salt melt ice?

Salt works by lowering the freezing point of water. When sprinkled on ice,it makes a brine with the film of the surface of water, which lowers the freezing point and starts melting the ice that the brine is in contact with-to a point. -Feb 25, 2014

https://www.treehugger.com/clean-water/why-does-salt-melt-ice-and-what-else-it-doing.html

What is brine?

Brine, saltwater, particularly a high concentrated water solution of common salt (sodium chloride)

- Jul 20,1998

https://www.britannica.com/science/brine
