         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. The protein content for millets falls in the range 10-12% with foxtail millet having 12.3% which is much higher than that of rice and wheat. They also have a larger range of essential amino acids as compared to other cereals.&nbsp;<br>2. Being complex carbohydrates, the fiber content is also between 10-12% which is much higher than staple cereals.&nbsp;The fiber acts as a prebiotic.<br>3. They have a high PUFA content- Bajra(1984mg/100g) &amp; Maize (1606mg/100g).<br>4. The Calcium content of Ragi (364mg/100mg) is 10 times higher than wheat or rice.&nbsp;<br>5. Iron content of Pearl &amp; Barnyard Millet and Bajra is also high.<br>6. They contain phytochemicals like phytates, polyphenols, tannins which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.&nbsp;<br>7. They are also rich in Vitamins B3, B6, B9 and Minerals like I, Cu, Mg, Mn and P.<br>8. They are low in saturated fat and sodium as well.<br>9.          <description><![CDATA[<div><em>N</em>utritional problems like protein energy malnutrition , anemia and vitamin A deficiency continue to plague a large proportion of Indians. Such problems compelled our government and various health organization to take initiative of searching food items with high nutritional value one such important&nbsp; indigenous crop is <strong>millet<br></strong>&nbsp;In India, millets were traditionally consumed but due to the push given to food security through Green Revolution in the 1960s, millets were rendered as ‘orphan crops’ – less consumed and almost forgotten but with the onset of several non communicable disease and increasing rate of malnutrition it has become imperative for all of us to discus the merits of millet in solving these issues. Millet grains are rich sources of nutrients like carbohydrate, protein, dietary fiber, good-quality fat and have substantially higher amounts of minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, manganese, zinc and B complex vitamins, making them a preferable choice over the cereal grains. <br>Some essential features which makes millet a perfect food grain to be used in Indian diet are as follows:-<br>1. Millets also contain several bioactive phytochemicals including feraxanase, lignan, β-glucan, inulin, resistant starch, sterols and phenolic compounds (e.g., ferulic acid, caffeic acid and quercetin). Studies have supported the role of polyphenols in antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and neuroprotective activities which in all have shown to be beneficial against diseases like cancer and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, inflammatory diseases, metabolic syndrome and Parkinson’s disease .<br>2. The millets are also regarded to have antimicrobial and DNA damage protection activities due to their phytochemical content.<br>3. Millets are an excellent source of slow digestive starch and fibers which are good for the&nbsp; trillions of gut bacteria.<br>4.Millet being source of several bioactive compounds can be used in the cultivation of gram-negative bacteria thus having excellent probiotic potential.<br>Different type of millets that are used in the world includes ragi, jowar, bajra, kuttu and ramdana.<br>&nbsp;<br>Millet is a whole grain that’s packed with protein, antioxidants, and nutrients. It&nbsp; have numerous health benefits, such as helping lower your blood sugar and cholesterol levels. We are gradually abandoning all our traditional foods in favour of trends in modernization. With a plethora of new products coming up in present and future, millets now are being abandoned as being too primitive to be used.<br><br>3. Another reason being Low remuneration that is less money paid for work or a service. Apart from this lack of input subsidies that is sum of money granted by the state or public body to help an industry keep the price of a commodity or service low. These are some of the factors that led to a shift from the production of millets (jowar in particular) to soybean, maize, cotton, sugarcane and sunflower.<br><br>4. There is a lack of proper organizations to facilitate production of varieties of seeds and its distribution. Crop management practices are not adopted due to socio-economic constraints.<br><br>5. Wheat and rice are available at incentive prices through PDS, WCD and other public funding programs.<br><br>6. Another reason for this has been the non-availability of suitable processing technologies and machinery for providing convenience in the form of the Ready-to-Cook (RTC) and Ready-to-Eat (RTE) products to consumers.<br><br>7. Lack of gluten in millets limited their usage in bakery products, and characteristics such as odours and hardy texture are also the roadblocks thus positioning them as a substitute for rice<br><br>8.Changing consumer perceptions towards the use of natural ingredients and increasing demand for high protein grains such as oat, buckwheat, and quinoa is expected to provide opportunities for industry expansion.<br><br>9. Demand for gluten free millets was not met due to inconvenient laboratory techniques.<br><br>10. It has declined also because of the Commercialization of millet products which was absent till a decade ago when ICAR-IIMR realized that no millet-based product was available on market shelves but was just lying in the laboratories. Also, the entire millets value chain was broken and unorganized, the demand-side pull was in a very pathetic state such that consumers didn’t even know the existence of millet-based products or their possibilities.</div>]]></description>

The area of cultivation for millets is comparatively low and this needs to be increased. Owing to low fertility,utilisation of dry lands to produce sufficient quality grains is a big challenge.<br>Farmers do not get fair prices of millets that they grow.On the other side, because of growing demands of millets in the city,government is trying to focus on the supply which is less and that has led to high prices of millet in the market.</div>]]></description>
