The work was completed during the weeks after Marilyn Monroe's death in August 1962. It contains fifty images of the actress, which are all based on a single publicity photograph from the film Niagara (1953).The twenty-five pictures on the left side of the diptych are brightly colored, while the twenty-five on the right are in black and white. It has been suggested that the relation between the left side of the canvas and the right side of the canvas is evocative of the relation between the celebrity's life and death. The painting was created by using a silk-screening process. Warhol used this procedure by using a woven mesh and stencils to transfer paint onto an enamel canvas. The repetitive images are at their surface alike, but upon further investigation you see how the oil and acrylic paints create different shades and visibility of Marilyn’s face. The left side of the painting utilizes color. Bright hues of yellow, orange and green provide a stark contrast to the right side of the painting. The 25 images on the right are in black and white, with some of the images being distorted and the actresses face barely seen. Warhol was influenced by the British Pop artists and began to focus on popular culture. His studio became known as The Factory, a nod to the industrial mode of production used to churn out mass amounts of material goods. Marilyn Diptych was the first painting in which Warhol used the assembly-line technique of silk-screening photographic images onto a canvas, permitting him to create many versions of a single subject, instead of hand painting. The artmovement is called Pop Art. By placing Monroe’s portraits in the diptych, Warhol is commenting on the saint-like nature of the famous, which gives them a kind of holiness and immortality. Marilyn Dipty is an icon of Pop art due to its references to pop culture and its comments on mass production and consumption.

The painting is based on promotional pictures of Marilyn Monroe from the 1953 film Niagara. This painting was done using oil, acrylic, silkscreen, and enamel on canvas two panels each. After the death of Marilyn Monroe in 1963, Warhol made this art piece based on the promotional photographs from the movie Niagara. The pictures of Marilyn fades and at times her face cannot be seen mainly because Warhol wanted to portray the mortality of the film star. By using bright colours, Warhol portrayed the star's ubiquitous presence in the media. The faded colours represent the bleak and depressing times of Marilyn's life and ultimately the end of her life as her picture begins to fade. Marilyn's Diptych became the first of many silkscreen paintings to come that participated in the Pop Art art movement. Warhol's studio was named as The Factory to pay homage to the pop culture movement of that era.
