A type of music that might fall under ethnomusicology would be a raga. It is a brand of music based in India and it involves a musical framework being created for musicians to improvise over. This music is intended to engage with the listener's emotions as well as put them in a trance that makes them feel relaxed. I definitely feel nice listening to ragas since the droning sounds from the sitar puts me in a meditative state.

One of the best known musicians of raga is sitarist Ravi Shankar. He was known as an influential figure from around the world having composed music for several movies, performed internationally, and even taught George Harrison the sitar, thus influencing several Beatles songs.

Even though ragas are based in India, I can learn more about this music by asking experts on the matter through a social media platform like Reddit or Facebook through DM messaging. In a diverse state like PA, I am confident that there are always concerts around me that honor the Indian culture to attend in order to learn more about this music and even more about India.

Yes! I'm Chinese, and really understand the variety in different culture music. Chinese music usually have instruments like Erhu or Guzheng, special drums and bells are applied to give that vibe as well. However in modern days, western instruments are combined into the music like violin, guitar, and piano. Many genres like R&Bs are more popular in Chinese society, only conceptual ideas are reserve to give that Chinese music feature.

I would recommend by getting in touch with Chinese films and video games if you are interested. Many music produced by them combine multiple elements and it’s easy to accept. Polynesian music and dance, in my opinion, is some of the most beautiful and enjoyable performances to get to experience both in person and on video. When my family visited Hawaii, one of the places we visited was the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. All throughout the day they had various performances you could watch. While traditionally, men and women often perform in separate groups, both men's and women's performances focus on different aspect of Hawaiian vocal and instrumental music, dance, culture, and storytelling. The best (and most enjoyable) way to experience and learn about these traditions is obviously in person. However, that's not going to be the most cost effective way to do so and if you don't feel like doing fundraisers for 5 years to save up for the trip... YouTube always works.

I belive an excellent example of ethnomusicology can also be found in western classical music. Yes, say all you want about how, "Oh, The west is what damages the traditions and innocence of a culture" Well, it is rather a bit of a two-edged-sword. How do you thnk those western composers where inspired? By foreign cultures in some cases. Take Mozart's "Ronda Alla Turka" - The Turkish March. Mozart was inspired by the Turks and their thriftiness using somewhat primitave instruments. Using his knowlege of Turkish style music, he turned pen to paper and composed Ronda Alla Turka. This is only one example of course, but there are many others who took cultue and put it to music. Including, Liszt's "Orpheus"

These two music genres are connected to the African American community and culture, which makes them interesting for me to study and learn more about. I would learn about these musical traditions by doing a number of things including reading books, watching documentaries and talking to older people that may know about the origin and evolution of these genres. I would also listen to some of the original songs in these categories to hear some of the messages behind the music.

One musical tradition that falls under the umbrella of ethnomusicology is the Seattle grunge scene of the late 80's and early 90's. It's a perfect example of how music culture shaped a place, community, and identity. I'd like to eventually learn about grunge via the Seattle Music Map.
