They were often successful in these battles, which typically led to American withdrawal. Originally, Canadians saw the War of 1812 as somewhat unnecessary because they had no grievances against America that were worth such action. After the War, Britain's North American colonies could expand and evolve, forming a new country. Once there was no longer an American threat in Canada, Canada's government became more aggressive when trying to acquire First People's land, which was a negative implication of the end of the War for the First Peoples. Additionally, the The Treaty of Ghent signed at the end of the War of 1812 did not eliminate British–American tensions which would peak during the American Civil War. Some of The Royal Navy secured channels at sea that were used to carry supplies to the colonies while other ships were fighting in the interior for control over Great Lakes. Colonial regulars, made up of British subjects in the colonies, worked on land to fight for Canada against American invasions. The militia made key contributions to the war effort like transporting supplies, guarding prisoners and sometimes fighting in battles. Laura Secord lived in Queenston, Upper Canada, which eventually was occupied by the Americans. On June 21st, 1813, Laura overheard American officers planning an attack on a British Outpost. She travelled 32 km across country to warn the British. On her journey she met Mohawk and Anishaabe warriors. The Americans were ambushed and defeated at the battle of Beaver Dams on June 24th of 1813.
