This loss has left a significant impact on their life in a melancholy way. The speaker feels isolated and lonely, and seems to be running away from their problems. The individual fears nature and is paranoid of its "threatening" actions against him/her. This is highlighted by the hissing of the leaves, as well as the darkening of the clouds.
