The term inhalants encompasses a broad range of substances that have different effects. As a result of this it is very difficult to classify them. One system divides them into four categories; volatile solvents, aerosols, gases, nitrites. Most inhalants are stimulants.

Volatile Solvents; Liquids that vaporize at room temperature. Ex. degreasers, gasoline, glues, correction fluids, felt-tip markers.

Aerosols; Sprays that use a propellant to aerosolize a solvent. Ex. spray paints, deodorant, vegetable oil sprays

Gases; Medical anesthetics. Ex. chloroform.

Nitrites; video head cleaners, room odorizers, leather cleaners, liquid aromas.

"Drug Facts: Inhalants." National Institute of Drug Abuse, National Institute of
     Health, Feb. 2017, www.drugabuse.gov/publications/drugfacts/inhalants.
     Accessed 18 May 2018.

The effects are different depending on the product, but most of them are dangerous as inhalants are toxic.

Health Consequences:
Volatile solvents are used to dissolve fat. When inhaled, this property causes the brain, which is rich in fat, to lose brain cells.

Filips, Janet D.

Researchers suggest that inhalants have been used since ancient times for recreation.
It is more established, however, that inhalant use began with the discovery of laughing gas, about 1770-1800.

The 50's saw a rise of gasoline inhalation and the 60's saw glue sniffing begin.

Nitrite use began in the 70's and was popular in the gay community. Users of nitrites experienced sexual rushes rather than the psychoactive effects of other inhalants.

Filips, Janet D.
