AAP/HN prompt 9-23-2016- Through experimentation and observations, science provides us opportunities to grow in our understanding of the natural world. We rely on unbiased and verifiable information so that we may make important decisions about our lives. Imagine a situation in which a scientist might be biased as they conduct a study. How do you think scientists work to avoid bias? by Jeffrey Cordary

I believe that scientists avoid bias by checking with other scientists who are conducting the same experiment. When scientists do repeated trials and check with other scientists, they have a higher chance of finding biased practices of the experiment. Another way of avoiding bias is by using not putting other aspects such as corporate pressure into the equation when finding determining a conclusion. This will ensure that the experiment is data driven and has a reasonable conclusion.

From my experience, scientists work to avoid bias by performing blind experiments in which they do not know which sample is the real sample and which sample is the control. They also avoid bias by using repeated trials and consulting with one another to make sure there is nothing that could be manipulating their data. Of course, this does not eliminate bias. There is still a capability for bias in science. Fortunately, that is why we minimize bias by repeating and recreating other people's experiments, as with

[AC]

I think that scientists repeat their experiments and use multiple trials in order to avoid any bias or miscalculations. In most experiments, scientists would have a constant in order to make sure that their data is accurate and record the change between each variable. In official experiments, scientists can not use their opinions; only facts. Bias can completely skew the outcome of an experiment, so it is extremely important to use completely accurate data. - John Lee

Scientists work to avoid bias by getting information from many different sources. If they rely on one study or just on their own opinion then the information could be false. They need different perspectives and more research to determine if something is true or not and avoid bias.

Scientists can avoid bias a number of ways. If there was a medical trial going on, bias is eliminated (or at least kept to a minimum) by using a double-blind trial, in which neither the patients nor the doctors administering the medicine know if the medicine is a placebo or not. Another way of avoiding bias is having peers or colleagues check your work anonymously. By anonymously, I mean that they don't know who's work they are editing, and you don't know who is checking your work.

I think that sometimes when inventing, learning or discovering something new scientists may be slightly biased to their own ideas. Because of this I think it is important to have more than one opinion on the data. Different views can insure that the information is valuable and authentic. I also think it's important to have evidence that your discovery is legit. Hopefully the observations and data you made through scientific observation is not biased, but completely factual. Scientists are required to use facts in their work, not opinions.

Scientists also usually work in teams, so that other people can make sure to eliminate other’s bias. These points ways are a few ways to avoid bias in their reports.
-Forrest Slaterbeck

I think scientists avoid bias by conducting an experiment multiple times. This way, they can focus more on the facts. If your bias gets proven wrong many times in a experiment, then you will change your opinion. Also, they could have multiple scientists conduct the same experiment and then they could compare data. After comparing data they could then make conclusions. Results could change a bias.

I think scientists work to avoid bias by carefully developing all stages of their experiment. Since bias can occur in the planning, data collection, analysis and findings, scientists must be careful not to manipulate any one area to achieve a desired result. Scientists can use standardized methods for data collection and should only conclude what results are indicated by the research. Scientists have to present the facts, even if its not the result they were hoping for.

I think that scientists work to avoid bias by using a variety of sources. If a scientist only used one new source all the time then they could always get information from the same opinion and only one persons voice will be heard witch could be wrong or disagreed with. Scientists will generally check a variety of sources with view points on opposite sides of the spectrum and find a common view point agreed upon by the most amount of people or great divides.

Scientists work to avoid bias by carefully planning their experiments and other works. Because scientists can be biased towards any part of their experiment they must carefully plan it out. They also may consult other professionals to review the resultant ensured nothing has been manipulated. Another way they can avoid bias is conducting repeated, constant trials. It is very important to have an accurate representation of their findings even if it was a failure.
-B.R.

Scientists work to avoid bias by thinking out every step of their experiments. If scientists are able to see in what ways they would be manipulated into producing false information they can counteract that feel. A situation where a scientist may be biased is when a Coke-Cola sugar scientist finds out the unhealthy facts of sugar in coke. This means she/he may be inclined to produce false information.

I think that scientist avoid bias by getting other peoples opinions, using different resources to collect information, and by using facts to interpret their data. So overall I think that a scientist just has to be open minded and mutual with their opinion on certain scientific topics. This is the best way to get accurate results.
