The first book that was both written and illustrated by Theodor Seuss Geisel was "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street". The book was rejected 27 times before being published in 1937.
He wrote Green Eggs and Ham on a dare. Ted Geisel’s publisher bet that Geisel couldn’t write a book using only 50 different words. In an effort to make learning to read more exciting for kids, he wrote a silly tale about a picky eater and a fellow who won’t take “No” for an answer.
Dr. Seuss’s honors include: two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody award, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, and the Pulitzer Prize.
Even though kids are fans of his work,the king of children's books didn't think much of rugrats. He is reported to have once said, “You have ‘em, I’ll amuse ‘em.” His widow Audrey even went so far as to say Seuss was afraid of children. She said he was always thinking, “What might they do next? What might they ask next?” She added, “He couldn’t just sit down on the floor and play with them.”
