the strawberry came from skywomans heart after she passes, that was her final gift. there are fields of wild strawberrries that grow without man's help. seeing berries and other foods as gifts instead of commodity changes our relationship with food. viewing food as objects has consquences and exploits them. it is being responsible for these gifts and showing gratitude. the unique way of exchanging gifts mulitplies every exchange and is a renewable resource. quote "gratitude is much more than thank you, it is a thread that fosters relationships. mandy

"I like to imagine that when Skywoman scattered her handful of seeds across Turtle Island, she was sowing sustenance for the body and also for the mind, emotion, and spirit: she was leaving us teachers. The plants can tell us her story; we need to listen"

This chapter talks to us about the delicate balance between humans and nature, and how we need to take care of our land not only for us but for children and our children's children, we have only one mother Earth and we need to take care of her so she can take care of us.

The quote I chose above stood out to me because mother Earth is always speaking to us and we are yet to listen and we need to stop and listen to her and show her the respect that has been gifted to us for years. Skywoman planted the seeds of our survival and gave us all a way to start our stories on our beautiful and plentiful world

In The Gift Strawberries, Robin Wall Kimmerer shares how picking wild strawberries as a child taught her about gratitude and nature’s generosity. She seems the berries as gifts, not something to be bought or owned. This helped her understand the importance of giving back to the Earth. Kimmerer believes we should treat nature with care and respect, not just as something to use.

I can connect this story with my habits to go to farmers market for vegies by thinking of the food as gift from Earth and the farmer, not just a product. Even though you pay for it, you’re closer to the source. We can show gratitude by supporting local farmers, wasting less food, and caring for the land through your choices. It’s about seeing food not just as a thing to buy, but as part of a relationship with people, the Earth and our community.
