Summary of the Denouement

The denouement in this story is also the climax of the story. After reconciling with each other and their family feud, Georg and Ulrich anticipate for their men to come to their rescue. As they wait, they spot some figures after yelling out. They were overjoyed with ecstasy as they can't wait to get back to their families and declare that this rivalry between the families is over. So happy, they were, that they even declared that no one will interfere their newfound friendship. As these figures start to approach Georg and Ulrich, Georg asks questions since he can't see due to the dry blood from the blow on his head when the tree fell on him and Ulrich. Ulrich excitedly replies back to Georg so he knows exactly what's happening. As they come even closer, he soon realizes, to his dismay that those figures weren't their men or even a man in general. They were wolves and it seemed to be the end to them and the reconciliation of their families.

Important Quotes from the Denouement

1.)¨For a space both men were silent, turning over in their minds the wonderful changes that this dramatic reconciliation would bring about" page 192

Georg and Ulrich had to endure each other's presence as they were trapped underneath the tree that had fallen upon them during the raging storm. Begrudgingly, at first, they eventually came to terms between themselves that this rivalry between their families is absolutely ridiculous. After their reconciliation, they are ecstatic for the positive outcomes that will come out from their misfortunate situation of being trapped. With this, they can't wait to get back to their own homes and get this ancient rivalry between their families over and done with; they no longer have to worry one another's motives or each other in general. This makes the reader infer that this short story will have a good outcome despite the many obstacles that faced Georg's and Ulrich's way; once they get rescued, their families will now finally live in serenity with each other.

2.) "And each prayed a private prayer that his men might be the first to arrive, so that he might be the first to show honorable attention to the enemy that had become a friend." page 192

With this newfound friendship between the unlikely pair, they each hope to be the first to enact on this promise of peace. How? Well, they each hope for their own men to quickly come to the rescue and whomever's men comes first gets the chance to make a gesture of peace, for the first time, to the other; it is an achievement to ones self to be the first and so may even brag from their own pride that they were the one that actually initiated it all. Though the future seemed bright, Saki brings in a surprise element to ruin these plans. With the involvement of the wolves, the story ends with a twist which astounds the reader due to how they didn't really expect this kind of situation happening. In my opinion, it is not the climax but the denouement that is the highlight of the story overall. After done reading, the reader goes on to imagine what would occur after the two's deaths and may end up thinking that despite their reconciliation, no one has witnessed it and so the family rivalry will continue; Georg's and Ulrich's efforts were for naught.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

This video, as morbid as it is, is an accurate representation of the denouement of "The Interlopers". This consensus was made because they both have an unpredictable twist ending. In the movie, the child of a Nazi fell victim to the fate of millions: murdered in a gas chamber; however, the Jewish boy escaped and went free. This was because, out of kindness, the Nazi child switched clothes with the captive Jewish boy. As this occured, the Jewish kid was set free, while the Nazi, was captured and gassed. Likewise, in the story The Interlopers, arch enemies for generations were on the verge of putting out the burning fire that is their hatred for each other; these actions were not performed though, due to a pack of wolves mauling them. Therefore, the components of ultimate death and unexpected endings provided an evident correlation between the resolutions.

The pack of wolves that mauled the characters in "The Interlopers" was symbolism of the many variables that prevent the settling of conflict. For example, at the very moment when the everlasting conflict between two families was going to come to a harmonious end, wolves killed them. These variables may be tangiable or not: such as accusations, money, power, speech, etc.
