Racism is the discrimination and antagonism directed against a specific race or ethnic group. Especially in America, blacks have been seen as less, due to mistreatment. America's emphasis on race has always caused people to feel inferior. White Americans feel that they have superiority and entitlement over the black community. Over time Blacks have gotten more opportunities opened up for them, but racism still occurs. John Howard Griffin’s novel Black Like Me shares an outside perspective of how society controls how one goes through life based on their appearance. My goal in this argumentative paper is to convince readers to read Black Like Me in order to understand perspective through a different point of view. In recent events, with the Black Lives Matter movement and George Floyd’s death, fear has been increased within the black community. Not only do those factors contribute to them feeling inadequate, but statistics have shown that the majority of Black Americans feel that society and the government hasn’t done enough for them. When writing this research paper, I used statistics and reliable sources in order to have a credible paper. I also read Black Like Me and used that as my main resource which is shown all throughout the paper. There is significance in my argument because it makes the audience think about how the way one walks through life is completely different then the way they do personally. It causes the reader to dive deeper into someone else's shoes.
