It is evident from the pictures shown left that lighting is a very important factor when it comes to film noir. One factor is that it is in black and white and so the correct tones and shades need to be met however more over it is clear that lighting can help change the whole atmosphere of a single scene and by doing this it allows for the audience to be emerged in enigmatic shots of the action.

Doing this opens up a world of opportunity to draw in the masses with scenes of mystery and suspense.

Film noir is arguably best left in the past for the fact that the old film style cameras emphasised the feel of the overall end product and although some modern renditions of film noir are good, it's just not quite up to the mark, especially seeing as modern film noir isn't black and white. Though black and white was the only available thing a the time of the first film noir movements, it certainly has more of a suspenseful and enigmatic atmosphere compared to the modern day coloured offerings.

Film Noir doesn't stop at just films or books however. LA Noire is a video game in which follows a detective on his hunt for the truth in LA and it hosts a wide range of car chases and shootouts, much like what the films of yesteryear contained. The revolutionary game brought about a big fanbase and revitalised film noir for a modern audience.

Film noir characters usually are built up over the narrative and as the story progresses, adding to the tension of the genre in which encourages audience members to watch on in awe. Each character often has their own story and with this can act shady within their own right which reflects the motives of what the genre and each individual film is trying to establish.
