I am one of those rare born and raise Floridians! This is my 7th year teaching. I spent my first two years teaching at a Title 1 in Volusia County. I spent the next 3 years at the top performing middle school in Seminole County. Now this is my second year in OCPS. I am at Horizon West Middle School, right near Disney. I had the adventure of helping open the school last year. Thanks to COVID, we did not get to celebrate a full year in the school building so hopefully we do this year!

I am a proud alumni of the University of Florida (Go Gators!). I received both my bachelors and my masters from UF. I have my bachelors in Political Science and my masters in Secondary Social Studies Education. I did my internship in a 7th grade Civics class and fell in love with sassy 7th graders and the Civics curriculum.

In my spare time, I am planning a wedding! My fiancé and I got engaged during quarantine, which has provided us some entertainment in planning a wedding. Here's to hoping we don't actually have to have a quarantine wedding too!

Reactive vs Proactive

3I really liked in the article how the author mentioned that she felt like she was being reactive instead of proactive. I've also been feeling this way. I think I've planned something out and then maybe the technology doesn't work or something else is being a little wonky, so I'm reactive to that situation. At the same time it made me think about what I've been doing in my class that always works even when something doesn't.
1) Consistency. The way that canvas is set up and the routines in class are always the same. They may be modified for LaunchEd students, but they are always the same. I think this helps students understand the expectations.
2) Relationships. This has been much harder with LaunchEd, but I find myself being a little silly in class so they can understand who I am as a person, because if they are going through something I still want them to feel comfortable coming to me. I also feel like a lot of our students are scared all of the time. I want them to be able to share that feeling and not worry.
3) Capability. What are the students capable of. The author touched on this. From using the technology to a standards based assignment, doing and expecting everything to be done at the highest level that a student is capable of. I understand that may change day to day, but the try is key to me.

Read the Room - More so then in years past my students are under a lot of pressure. This year i have been forced to improve upon my ability to evaluate the mood in my class and of each individual student. Where as in years past the pressure of life at home was somewhat alleviated by the time spent in school with friends and teachers. 2. Structure goes out the window quickly in this current climate when technology has the ability to infer with your normal classroom management or lesson plans. So, the ability to adjust and maintain control is more important.
