Recent research indicates that prisons are being used as a place for safety for some women with complex mental health needs. 
Some women we work with tell us they intentionally commit crimes in order to go to prison as the reality they face on release is so bleak that they cannot cope, most notably in the case of street homelessness. It is also difficult for women to get residential rehab as an alternative to prison. This therefore means that for women prison is the only establishment where they access detoxification services.
