Assumed to be perpetrated by the Nazis, instilled the threat of communism 

March 1933: Concentration Camps 

• March 22, 1933: Concentration camps in Dachau, Buchenwald and other locations set up in 1933 with capacity of 5,000 people to intimidate political opponents and dissenters
• 100,000 arrested, including a lot of communists following the Reichstag fire

March 5, 1933: Reichstag Election 

• SA gangs roughed up political opposition, such as the KPD and SPD, 69 dead in the election campaign of March 1933

Enabling Act 

• Threatened Reichstag to vote for the Enabling Act using armed forces 

Gleichschaltung 

• Abolition of trade unions and elimination of their leaders 
• Aggressive towards other political parties causing them to dissolve 
• Gestapo (Secret Police) for intimidation

July 1934: Night of the Long Knives

• Eliminated threat from disorganized SA (3 million members) 
• Removed Ernst Rohm

• March 31, 1933: Nazi assemblies replaced regional parliaments 
• April 7, 1933: Reich governors oversaw states 
• January 30, 1934: state governments subordinated to central government 

Trade-unions were banned and displaced by German Labour Front (DAF). 

Political parties banned/dissolved themselves, making Germany a one-party state. 

• Communists, SDP, Catholic Centre Party 

Civil service officials were replaced by Nazis 

Concordat between Nazi and Papacy to remove the church from politics.

German Christians movement (Deutsch Christen), that aimed to integrate Nazism and religion, attracted opposition.
