There were many problems during the reconstruction during healthcare because healthcare was not developed. A problem is the high risk of ingesting contaminated food and drugs. This would cause many citizens to have the risk of getting sick or causing illness. Another problem is there was a lack of healthcare to American citizens. The government took no actions to enforce voluntary funds or make sick insurance compulsory, as the federal government left healthcare matters to the states.This caused healthcare to not be available to many especially the working class in the progressive era.

Many reformers stood up to improve Health and Safety. Among these is Upton Sinclair who wrote the Novel called the Jungle. This exposed the lack of sanitation and safety in the meatpacking industry. It also brought attention to the lack of safety for workers and caused many Americans to wonder what they were eating. Another reformer during this period is President Theodore Roosevelt. He passed the meat inspection act and signed the pure food and drug act into office. This banned the sale of impure food and medicines.

Solutions were made to solve to problem of contaminated food and lack of healthcare. In 1906, after President Theodore Roosevelt read the jungle he signed in the pure food and drug act. This solves the problem of contaminated food for citizens. Lillian Ward was a nurse who started the visiting nurse programs in New York City. This made it so nurses could help people who were sick at home. This helped improve the lack of healthcare and made it more widely available

In the past many foods that were consumed by Americans were contaminated. Now a lot of food is contaminated with unhealthy and disease causing food dye. In the progressive era the healthcare was very poor, now many are at a risk for overdosing on drugs. A comparison I can make is both these issues are life threatening and killing.

In the past to solve problems, acts and administration were signed into office. Now that these organizations are set up less problems occur. Now there is more awareness of health and safety. A comparison I can make is that legal action was taken in order to find a solution to the problems then & now.

Present days there are still problems in health and safety. These problems take millions of lives in the U.S every year. Other problems can result in short or long term health issues. One of these problems is the use of food dye in food. This can cause health problems and studies show it can result in cancer. Another issue in present day is the use of opioids. Opioid is a class of drugs used to reduce pain, it is highly addictive. The opioid drug is relatively harmless when taken in small dosages. However due to it being highly addictive millions have died from overdose of the drug.

There are many reformers today that speak out against problems in health and safety. One of these reformers is Robert F. Kennedy, he is the secretary of U.S health and human. He speaks to food industry leaders, about removing artificial color additives from products. He is hoping to do this by the end of his time in office. He is also the pillar of the Make America Healthy Again movement. Vani Hari is also a activist. She is founder of Food babe which is a wellness blog and Truvani which is a business that sells healthy plant protein. These corporations delivered 400,000 signatures on a petition. This petition was to the Michigan headquarters of Kellogg's. It was an attempt to remove artificial food dyes. She also gives statements to news channels on trying to remove food dyes.

Unfortunately not all modern day health and safety problems have been solved. A solution has not yet been made to permanently ban food dyes from food. However the FDA is revoking the authorization for the use of FD&C Red No.3 based on the federal food, drug and cosmetic act. There is also a petition in action repealing color addictive that permits the use of unsafe food dyes in food and drugs. There have been many steps used to decline the rate of overdose death. The Trump administration announced that it would extend the emergency declaration linked to the opioid overdose crisis. This resulted in a decline in the number of overdose deaths by 25% for 12 months. However even though there is a decline in overdose death it is likely the problem will never be completely solved. But enforcing more processions like this can help the crisis decrease.
