Sassy Red

13x4.3

B-Mix, Glaze/Underglaze

First koi fish done during the year in 3D with clay. I took the approach of using bright hues of red and curving the tail upward. In doing this it is to emphasize on the representation of koi to me and accepting how I connect to the animal on a spiritual level.

Glam of being Aged

14x6

B-Mix with speckles, Glaze

After my first piece, I did part of a revision on this piece on the idea of having the tail curved up. However, I wanted to have the tail done to have a movement that was effortless on the fish and shape on the piece. The glazes I used gave a worn down lighting on it and highlighted the idea that age brings becoming worn down. But that idea doesn't have to be negative but accepting the changes and showing what can be done because of those changes.

The glaze worked to give the effect of the fish splashing in the bowl giving a whimsical movement to the fish. As the fish is laying against the bowl resting as life goes on and taking a moment to experience what it is surrounded by.

Contributing to the idea as the koi fish passes life so does the memories it holds and continuing forward and not going back into the past. Representing to myself that the past will always be held in memory but doesn't account for what is happening in the present.

I practiced with both China Blue and Blue underglaze to see which was best to use to have the right pigment of blue. On the design I used bubbles and flowers, some of the flowers I used on this piece were apart of the piece I did a revision on.

But would always just say "I just like koi fish" keeping it at a surface level, never understanding of my connection to it. So through my discovery of koi I did research on the reasoning of how a connection to the fish related to me and realized how many traits I saw within me.
