Emily spent all her time in her bedroom writing poems she was isolated from the outside world. But it looks like she wanted that to change. In the poem she writes that her "message is committed to hands she cannot see" meaning that whatever was in hold for her future or whatever would throw her message out there was in hands she couldn't see. The poem talks about nature’s simple, overarching plans for society and expresses an accepting tone to match the speaker’s welcoming attitude towards nature’s plans as well as a lonely tone acting as an extension of the speaker’s feelings towards society. The poem takes on a lonely tone at the beginning through the speaker’s  description of how she is reaching out to the world despite the world not reaching out to her. Here, the narrator’s loneliness is emphasized by the way she informs the readers of her relationship with society, specifically using the negative connotations of the word “never” to emphasize her negative experiences with society and her loneliness due to it. The narrator then goes on to describe nature and uses the word “committed” to describe nature’s will to carry out its plans for the inevitable death of humans. The poet also uses the word “tenderly,” which carries a positive connotation, to show how the speaker simply accepts her eventual fate and only wishes for nature to kindly judge her.


]]> 2022-02-17 16:41:54 UTC https://padlet.com/hmayorga100/wwkdtcows4imj1gw/wish/2053614198 Poem Analysis Q.4 hmayorga100 https://padlet.com/hmayorga100/wwkdtcows4imj1gw/wish/2053615624 Personification is consistently employed throughout the poem as a means to effectively convey the narrator’s thoughts and attitude toward nature, enhancing the overall meaning of the poem, and supporting the accepting tone of the poem by further characterizing nature as a person in order to help the readers understand the reasoning behind the narrator’s decision to simply accept nature’s message.  In the beginning of the poem, the narrator talks about “...[the] simple news that Nature told / With tender majesty. / Her message is committed.”(Lines 3-5) Here, the narrator uses personification to characterize nature with distinct beliefs and personality traits; through the narrator’s choice to humanize nature, the narrator is able to freely interact with nature as if it were a person and impactfully expresses their acceptance of nature’s message while connecting the readers to the personified version of nature. The word choice used when personifying nature also affects the overall tone of the poem, with the narrator using positively connotated words to invoke a positive impression of nature from the readers, supporting the narrator’s acceptance of nature’s message at the end.
