o Netiquette is the combination of the words ‘network’ and ‘etiquette’ which refers to how to properly behave and communicate while online. It is to have manners while using communicating over the internet in any form (ex: email, social media, online gaming, comments, etc.). A user must have a common sense of respect for others views and follow the unwritten rules of courtesy online. In order to follow netiquette users must respect others opinions, not write offensive comments, respect others privacy along with many other accepted behaviors.

o CIPA or the Children's Internet Protection Act is an act that requires all schools and public libraries to implement filters and other restrictions on the internet in order to protect the children from obscene or harmful images, videos, and articles such as pornography, indecency, or other harmful content. CIPA was introduced in 1999 however, it was instituted in December of 2000 and signed into a law in 2001 by President Clinton in order to protect children from accidentally coming across explicit content.

o CIPA was implemented in order to filter access that students had to the internet while at school or a library. Children can no longer access indecent or vulgar sources on the internet and this helps keep them safe from seeing harmful or offensive images, pictures, videos, or comments. CIPA has greatly protected children from random inappropriate spam messages or emails. It has also restricted the content that can be sent to them while using email or an online chat room, ultimately protecting them from receiving unwanted and inappropriate messages.

o I believe netiquette is very important for everyone to know, understand, and follow. It is necessary for online users to use because we all want to be able to express ourselves and our opinions, but we must do so in a professional and respectful way. We do this in order the make sure the messages we want to send out are understood in the correct context and do not harm or offend anyone who is reading it. Netiquette is absolutely essential to teach our students because in our society almost everything is done online. They need to know how to respect others and convey the correct message in order to survive in our technology-centered society. Understanding how to be friendly and professional along with respecting other opinions while communicating online is a skill that is vital for students and as a future teacher I feel that it is vital for me to completely understand netiquette and be able to teach my students how to follow netiquette and understand its importance.

Netiquette is important to show a positive influence on the internet. It is vital to teach our students that what they say online does not just stay online and can have real affects on people. Behind every account is a person and it is incredibly important to make sure students understand this. The idea of netiquette is so important as it provides a guideline for students and adults to actually think before they post something online. There are people who do not realize that their online persona can affect their real world persona. Thinking before making a post or comment can help people avoid saying things they regret that will never leave the internet.

o Digital law is extremely important for the safety of students and to know about in general. It is something that everyone needs to know about because it can greatly affect their lives. There are many legal issues that can come about if someone does not follow digital law. For example, issues with identity theft and computer hacking are covered by digital law and if someone were to commit these crimes they could face harsh punishments such as imprisonment. Students need to know the laws in order to follow them and not get in trouble, along with understanding when their rights have been compromised and to take action against it. As a teacher, it is important to know because teachers must be able to teach their students all about digital law considering the way our society has shifted doing almost everything online.

It is important to protect myself and others on the internet through the use of laws. I hope to be able to help students learn about these issues. Students also need to understand that the internet is forever and protecting themselves and their information is very important. Digital laws are incredibly important in protecting the average user from hackers and identity theft. It is important to know this as a teacher to better prepare my students in safely using technology in and out of the classroom.

oThe teacher can introduce netiquette to their class by showing a video where people are online and sending emails, using social media or in chatrooms while not using proper netiquette. The students can then discuss the video amongst each other and make a list as a class of the proper and improper behaviors they viewed in the video. The teacher can then show a PowerPoint to highlight the more important rules of netiquette and then allow the students to work in small groups to create posters that clearly show the rules of netiquette and some real-life examples. (Kelly O'Connor)
and

o Students can be taught about Digital Law when writing a paper that involves multiple sources. Students can demonstrate how to properly cite their sources and how to avoid plagiarizing other author's work. Students can correct improper citations as well as identifying different ways of plagiarizing work. (Rachel Wahlers)

o 1. Respect others privacy- It would be considered bad netiquette to give out others personal information or photos online without having their permission to do so.

o 2. Allow others to express their opinions- You do not need to agree with what others say on the internet, however, you do need to respect their right to share their opinions and express their thoughts. Do not start an argument online because you disagree with another user’s opinion.

o 3. Proofread- Before you post a comment, photo or send an email to be sure to double check that you are sharing exactly what you intend to share. A misuse of grammar or spelling could alter the content of your message and change the meaning. Always reread what you wrote before you post or send.

o 4. Accounts are run by people- It is good to keep in mind that every account you see online is run by an actual person and that they have emotions and imperfections just like everyone else. It is easy to forget that what you say and do online have real life consequences but it is essential to remember everything you say is being read by real people with real feeling.

o 5. Be yourself- make sure you express yourself the same way you do in person as online. Your comments, accounts, and emails are all a reflection of you as an individual, therefore, you need to try to be yourself as much as possible while bringing respectful while using the internet.
