The first lesson was extremely amazing, even more than I had expected. I just acknowledged that this class would be taught in English just a few days before I actually came there and studied. I was a little bit worried, wondering whether learning about Vietnamese culture in English would torture me or not :))))))) But that was just my thought at that time 🫢 I was wrong, learning like this seems so appealing cause we are encouraged to stand up, to express our thoughts and get to know each other. And soon we also stand a chance of expanding our knowledge about different aspects of our country & our English skills in order to show everyone about Vietnamese culture in English language.

I like the atmosphere of this class so much. And hehe I hope to get high scores, too.

The energy that the teacher brought to this class was quite something I must say. I mean ULIS teachers are awesome, but for a non-history-major, to learn about history of Vietnam with such enthusiasm that i experienced in the first lesson was suprissing to me. The first lesson of Fundamentals of Vietnamese culture left such a strong impression. Before entering this class, I used to have a kinda prejudiced preconception that this subject would be tiresome and boring just like learning History back in high school. But what hit me so hard was that the lesson was carried on in such an engaging and dynamic manner, which put me in awe for first few moments. The course started with a funny yet welcoming session called "getting to know each other", in which I was not only able to understand more about classmates that I am gonna work with in the next 15 weeks, but also find my lovely teammates. Then, we got a brief glimpse of the lessons we are gonna learn, all of which indeed evoked my curiosity and enthusiasm to dig deeper into Vietnamese culture. Above all, the reason why I chose this offline class was because of Mrs.Phuong. I met her once at Hội làng U with my friend Nhi, who studied in her class in the first semester. I was so impressed by the friendliness, openness and her energetic aura. I just love the way she asked me about my feelings about studying in ULIS, although I was not her student at that time. From that moment, I decided that for the next term, I would definitely enroll in her class. And here it comessss!

I am so looking forward to learning this course and I also set my heart on achieving A+.

I initially thought this class would be highly theoretical and that I might struggle to keep up with the English used. However, I decided to give it a try because I've always found tasks related to promoting or sharing information through videos or infographics interesting. I didn't expect to enjoy this course as much as I did during the first lesson. I suppose it'd be more accurate to say that I didn't know what kind of expectations I should have. When I first registered for this course, I was very worried because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to keep up when taught 100% in English. But the first session made me feel very happy and excited. I'm thrilled to be in this class and to have received such a warm welcome from Cô Phương and all of my classmates. The opportunity to take this course means so much to me, especially as a Vietnamese American and child of refugees. So much cultural knowledge and memory has been lost in my family's journey to the US. Immigrant families are taught from Day 1 of their arrival into the US that the key to success is to assimilate smoothly into American society--which meant that I was never encouraged to take pride in my Vietnamese culture. I'm proud to have grown out of that mindset as an adult, and at the same time I mourn how much of my heritage culture has been stripped away from me. I chose to study in Vietnam to begin the process of restoring my cultural awareness and I hope that this course provides a strong foundation for me to continue on this journey :) I'm already feeling so hopeful and so excited for the semester and all the learning that is to come!
