Red Flag #3- Ancient Wisdom

Definition: Ancient wisdom describes that it is twisted and wrong to think that ancients had more knowledge than modern-day science. People may believe in more ancient wisdom practices because they are said to have more knowledge.

Connection: This image is related to ancient wisdom because many people believe that the power of prayer can heal someone. Even though most of the time, it is not true. The power of prayer is not proven to be affective.

Red Flag #5- Appeal to Authority

Definition: If someone makes a claim or a statement people may believe them because of their authoritative imagery. Such as celebrities, someone wearing a white lab coat or someone with a degree.

Connection: The image below shows a picture of Donald Trump. He is a perfect example of this red flag. He is the president of the United States. People will believe what he says more likely than what others say because he is the president. He can influence people because of his appearance and high status.

Definition: Proof by verbosity is when someone is using a large amount of evidence and information to prove something. By doing that, it makes the appearance that their claim must be true.

Connection: This video relates to proof by verbosity by explaining how many products use a lot of information to support their product, even though they have no concrete evidence. Many people search for quantitative evidence and not qualitative evidence.

The product could in fact be deadly/poisonous.

Connection: This is an image of hemlock. Hemlock is a poisonous plant that is all natural. It is harmful even though it is all natural and can be found in the forest.

Reason for Belief #1- Emotional Connection

Definition: Emotions can get in the way of our thinking. They can blur our rational thought. High emotions can lead to not being able to think straight and believe in things that may not be true.

Connection: This picture shows a medium contacting the dead. This relates to emotional connection because if someone you knew passed away, your thoughts would be to want to get in touch with them again. You want to believe that they are still alive in some way.
