Health, social, economic and educational gaps between Indigenous peoples and the rest of Canada are the result of the system's terrible effects on Indigenous communities. A phenomenon known as the "Sixties Scoop" arose in the 1950s and 1960s as the residential school system was being phased out. Thousands of Indigenous children were taken from their families and adopted into primarily non-Indigenous homes during this time. For those impacted, this resulted in a loss of social ties, cultural identity and legacy which exacerbated long-term problems and effects like high rates of poverty and socioeconomic hurdles. Indigenous people are still impacted by the 1960s Scoop because it increased the number of Indigenous children in the child welfare system and caused intergenerational trauma.
