Formal Academic students will excel academically but may not have life skills which are necessary to thrive in the work force. When both work together, it allows students to obtain knowledge through their education, while learning the necessary social skills. I grow up in both Formal Academic (from K1 - Y8) and Play based (Y9 - Y12), I think it can be mix. can let the children have some basic rule when young, then open minded after; or otherwise around also can.

Formal Academic can let children follow the rules, share with others, better team work; and play based can open children's brain to think, to discuss, to feel more.

I think the preference is based on the different ways individuals learn (learning styles) based on theories by Kolb etc. For children who are  kinesthetic learners for example, play based classroom would probably bring more benefits to him/her rather than a structured classroom.

The two approaches SHOULD be complementary and work hand in hand with one another. I think:
Learning should be fun and as something that is not forced onto the individual. The individuals in the video seem to enjoy being in the school/classroom that they are in.

I wonder:
Reggio classrooms are great, especially for early years and preschools. how to extend: get all the students to create their own design with tshirts and have a small competition ( all kids will receive participation reward but the best design will receive something better, this is to encourage kids to work hard to receive gifts they like)

Assess & evaluate learning goals are met: During their presentation, they have to explain  which plant was used and give one idea of other uses for it
