Post traumatic stress disorder

A mental health problem called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is brought on by extremely stressful, frightful, or upsetting experiences.

According to a study performed by the University of Cambridge, poor working conditions such having too little time, sexual harassment, and handling challenging situations without help are contributing factors to the high rates of trauma-related mental health disorders among UK police forces.

Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are much more common in police personnel due to their exposure to ongoing stress and traumatic occurrences.

Anxiety is a feeling of unease that can range from minor to severe and includes concern and fear.

Depression

A mental health condition known as depression is characterised by poor mood or a loss of interest and enjoyment in activities. A variety of additional changes in your emotions and behaviour may also result from it. Your symptoms could be different from others. There can be variations in the intensity, duration, and impact on your day-to-day activities.

Due to organisational difficulties and occupational pressures including physical and psychological hazard (such as major occurrences or unintentional injuries on the job), police officers are particularly vulnerable to depressive symptoms.

Paranoia

Being paranoid is the unreasonable and unrelenting belief that someone is 'out to get you' or that you are the target of constant, bothersome scrutiny from other people.

Paranoia tends to evolve from anxiety therefore the symptoms are very similar in the police force. Anxiety is typically characterised by physical signs including muscle tension and behavioural abnormalities, as well as heightened vigilance in anticipation of potential threats.

Panic disorders

Anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, which is typified by recurrent, unplanned panic attacks, are mental and behavioural disorders. Abrupt episodes of extreme terror, known as panic attacks, can cause palpitations, perspiration, trembling, dyspnea, numbness, or the sense that something dreadful is about to happen. Within minutes, the symptoms reach their peak intensity.

Healthy eating

Healthy eating is essential for the body to receive the correct nutritions it needs to function.

It protects you from a variety of chronic noncommunicable diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. A healthy diet includes eating a variety of foods and consuming less salt, sugar, saturated fat, and industrially generated trans fats.

Exercise

Regular physical activity can help you build muscle strength and increase your endurance. Exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues, allowing your cardiovascular system to function more efficiently.

Regular exercise also gives you a lower risk of:

coronary heart disease and stroke

type 2 diabetes

Dementia

Breast cancer in women

Early death increasing by 30%

Bowel cancer

Depression

Why is being healthy and fit important in the police?

The Police is a hard career that demands personnel to be physically and mentally fit. Fitness is one of the most important aspects that can influence an officer's performance, safety, and effectiveness on the job.

Some of the main reasons why being healthy and fits important in the police:

Enhanced endurance- Policing requires long periods of patrolling, standing, and walking. A good level of fitness means that police can keep their energy levels up and perform their responsibilities effectively throughout their shifts.

Reduced risk of injury- Officers who are physically fit have a lower chance of getting hurt while on the job. Enhancing muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility will help prevent sprains, strains, and other frequent injuries that officers deal with.

Improved teamwork- Physical fitness is crucial to team chemistry. A fit officer is more likely to keep up with their colleagues under high-stress situations, which helps the team's overall performance and effectiveness.

It is impossible to exaggerate the value of fitness in the police. Officers can increase their endurance, lower their risk of injury, improve their mental health, and make sure they can carry out their duties effectively by keeping a high level of physical fitness. In the end, everyone benefits from a safer and more effective community when there is a fit police force.

Drugs are chemicals that affect the body and brain. Different drugs can have different effects. Some drug effects include long-term and permanent health effects. They can continue even after the person stops using the substance..

Drug misuse

Consequences:

A weakened immune system

Heart conditions from heart attacks to collapsed veins

Nausea and abdominal pain

Strain on the liver

Seizures, strokes, mental confusion and brain damage

Lung disease

Alcohol misuse

Heavy drinking - one time or over time - can seriously damage your health.

Brain- Alcohol can change how the brain functions and looks by interfering with its communication channels. These disturbances can alter behaviour and mood, as well as impair cognition and coordination.

Heart- Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol over an extended period of time or all at once can harm the heart, leading to issues such as:

Cardiomyopathy (the heart muscle stretches and droops)

Arrhythmias (irregular pulse)

Heart Attack

High blood pressure

Immune System- Overindulging in alcohol consumption can impair immunity, leaving the body more prone to illness. Those who drink excessively on a regular basis are less likely than those who do not to have illnesses like tubercular disease and pneumonia. Heavy drinking on one occasion reduces your body's defences against illnesses for up to 24 hours after the intoxication.

Smokings effects on the body

An individual who smokes regularly is more likely to get a number of potentially fatal diseases, like:

Cancer

Lung disease

Heart disease and stroke

Poor blood circulation in certain parts of the body like the feet

Type 2 diabetes

Ulcers in the digestive system

What does the police service think about these unhealthy choices?

Smoking-

The police are highly discouraged to smoke whilst they are in uniform.

In the summer of 2007, the Health Act 2006 went into effect nationwide, outlawing smoking in all confined spaces and public buildings.

By proposing legislation to ensure that children turning 14 this year or younger will never be legally marketed tobacco products, the government is ushering in the first generation of smokers without children. As there is no safe age to smoke, this will stop future generations from ever starting.

Drug misuse-

No matter where or when the drug was consumed, the police maintain a zero tolerance policy regarding adverse drug tests, and officers or staff who test positive will face disciplinary action.

Alcohol-

It is said that to be fit for duty, all police officers who are on duty and any member of the police staff who holds a designated role must not have more than 13 micrograms (µg) of alcohol in 100 millilitres (ml) of breath.

In order to maintain the high expectations for appearance, items should be maintained clean and pressed. Additionally, uniforms and personal cleanliness should be kept to a high degree by police personnel.

As a police officer you never know what your job might entail of whether you are being called to a murder investigation or talking to the community, your hygiene is very important.

The policing workforce's mental health is deteriorating, and burnout is a result of shift work, workload, and external pressures. Remarkably, high levels of exhaustion were recorded by 69% of police personnel, with 28.9% reporting very high levels of fatigue.

Exposure to trauma on a regular basis may also raise the risk of chronic physical illness among law enforcement personnel. Trauma is one of the many reasons officers or members of the police service suffer from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).

These are most likely the most common PTSD symptoms that the police will see. A PTSD sufferer might show excessive vigilance, hyperreactivity, and jitters. As an illustration: A person suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is always on the lookout for potential threats and may feel deeply intimidated by anyone who approaches them. This is particularly dangerous if you're being approached from behind, which happens occasionally with a second officer. When you try to guide or restrain a person suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, they may become angry or violent because they feel easily intimidated.
