These lesson plans relate to the LGBTQIA+ community and their place in it. It was recently mandated by J.B. Pritzker that the history of this community is required to be taught in Illinois schools. 

I want students to question their feelings about this community and hopefully accept this community. In any case, there needs to be a conversation surrounding this. Best Man has a story of a young boy who is starting to learn about the gay community, eventually learning that his student teacher is gay. He also learns that students have done horrible things to a student that they believe to be gay. 

The message of the book is ultimately that being gay is not a choice. Students can come up with their own thoughts surrounding this book, but I believe the ultimate message is a positive one. I worry that fourth graders might be too young to grasp the severity of the questions being asked, but it is something they will eventually learn about.  When I was growing up, students were always calling each other gay and not always knowing what it meant. At least, this way students will be informed about the topic. 

I want students to have in class time to work on their reading and not take too much of it home because I do not believe in giving too much homework at a young age. I will try to be as delicate with the topic as I can, but my message I want them to learn is one of acceptance. I might have students do a research project to learn about this community because I think knowledge is power. Hopefully, I will not get too many upset parents.
