NAR 4.B: How does the narrator's distance from the events of a narrative affect the details and information presented to the reader?

Since the narrator is one of the townspeople, Emily is put in a bad light which make it looks like she’s a strange person to the reader. The narrator uses the word "we" a lot throughout the passage. For example, "We did not say she was crazy then. We believed she had to do that." The narrator is telling the story just from what they are observing without actually fulling knowing Emily as a person and who she really is. This creates some bias in the story and the reader only knows Emily from one perspective. This perspective that the reader knows might not be who Emily really is and the story does not reveal the reasons behind Emily’s actions.

NAR 4.A: Who is the narrator of the text? What details convey that?

It can be assumed that the narrator of this story is one of the townspeople. The first sentence of the story states "When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her funeral..." The pronoun "our" reveals that the narrator lives in the same town as Emily and the story is told from their perspective.

Perhaps the reason for Emily's isolation towards the town comes from the death of her father and the challenges she has encountered in her life. "After her father's death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at all." As time goes on, the chances of her marrying Homer Barron decreases. With every person in her life leaving her possibly the feeling of abandonment is what causes her to be distant towards the town and eventually ends up poising Homer. From the townspeople perspective, without knowing the hardship Emily has encountered, this is why they see her as being crazy.

This time period reveals to the reader the values and beliefs of people during this time. The mayor of the town says "..no Negro woman should appear on the streets without an apron.." The narrator reveals that the Emily was the only remnant of that greater time which reveals the overall mindset of the town.

The reader learns about Emily's life in flashbacks as the author does not take a linear approach. The story starts out with Emily's funeral. The story then goes back to the past revealing everything about Emily and her life. The end of the story reveals that the funeral is yet another flashback. This sequence of events reveals that the past and the present as coexisting and they influence each other. As time moves forward, no one in the town forgets about Emily and their memories of her and her family do not stay distant. No matter how much time has passes the past can play a dynamic role into the present. Even though at the end of the story Emily has passed away, the townspeople cannot help but be invested into her because of the reputation Emily upholds.
