Reflection of "The Yellow Wallpaper"

This short story was very intriguing but also disturbing. "The Yellow Wallpaper" shows the mindset of those in prior generations that women are inferior to men. Through this story, it is shown that during this time period, it was commonly thought that men knew what was best for the women they were in relationships with. I dislike how controlling John is toward his wife. While her nervous disorder does require attention and assistance, it bothers me that John does not listen to the wife when she voices her wishes.

Another aspect of this story that was interesting to me was how isolated the couple was. John thought getting away from other people would be best, but I think this led her disorder to become even more uncontrollable. She was not allowed to see relatives or friends except for the fourth of July when she was able to see very few people. The wife was also not allowed to see her child, and I think this may have added to her issues. Though she acknowledges it may have been in the best interest of the child, she may also have been suffering from post-partum depression, as millions of women do each year.

"If a physician of high standing, and one's own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression—a slight hysterical tendency—what is one to do?" (pg 340) This shows the mindset of society in this time period that the narrator was unable to make a decision for herself.

"I think sometimes that if I were only well enough to write a little it would relieve the press of ideas and rest me." (pg 342) The narrator realizes that writing could potentially help her to ease her mind, but her husband forbids it.

"'What is it, little girl?' he said. Don't go walking about like that—you'll get cold." This is one example of John referring to his wife as inferior and stating his commands to her.

The main conflict of "The Yellow Wallpaper" is between the narrator and her inner thoughts/insanity. She struggles to manage her nervous disorder, so she is conflicted between following her own wishes to investigate the paper or following the commands of her caretakers and John. She ultimately decides to lock herself in the room and submit to her inner thoughts.
