The basic definition of cathartic behaviour is that an individual relieves internal discomfort or tension through some form of emotional release, a process that usually manifests itself in the externalisation of emotions, such as outbursts of negative emotions, such as anger, anxiety and frustration.

My interest in the relationship between venting and emotional control stems from my personal life experiences. When faced with stress, I often struggle to manage my emotions effectively and tend to gravitate towards venting without fear. This has led me to think deeply about how to effectively regulate my emotions and avoid the adverse effects of negative emotions on my daily life. At the same time, I have come to realise that the act of venting is in a way similar to sharing part of one's pain with others, a phenomenon that is somewhat similar to the relationship between artist and audience.

A study conducted by Stephen Marcus et al. found that after a period of emotional catharsis practice, participants experienced an increase in heart rate variability and a significant decrease in psychological stress levels. Although the duration of this physiological effect was short, the positive impact in the short term cannot be ignored.

A study conducted by Claire Albert and others found that the effects of emotional catharsis are closely related to the mode of catharsis. For example, when faced with anger, positive catharsis (e.g., through exercise or expressive writing) tends to bring about better emotional regulation, while negative catharsis (e.g., vandalism or violent behaviour) tends to exacerbate anger and even lead to escalation of emotions. Albert's research suggests that choosing the right catharsis is crucial to emotion regulation, and that only catharsis in the right context can effectively control emotions and reduce psychological burdens.

Therefore, I believe that there is a close interrelationship between catharsis and emotion regulation. Catharsis can be seen as a form of emotion regulation, which helps people to restore their inner peace and comfort by releasing pent-up negative emotions. In the face of life's stresses and disturbances, emotions often become overly complex and build up deep inside. At this time, finding a proper outlet can effectively release these emotions, reducing the emotional burden and making people feel much more relaxed.

It has also made me realise that through artistic expression, not only can we achieve a positive catharsis of emotions, but we can also support our emotions, thus providing us with the motivation to continue to move forward.

Lee’s (2019) project, "Misplaced Euphoria", allows participants to inhabit the manic mind of bipolar patients through interactive performance. Emotive lighting, shifting soundscapes, and hypnotic patterns aim to elicit empathy by steeping audiences in the erratic energies of mania. While limited in scope, Lee’s work constitutes an important case study on leveraging interactive art to build compassion for the bipolar experience. Expanding such multisensory approaches could potentially tackle stigma.

Scholars such as John Bartholomew and Richard Stone have critiqued traditional theories of catharsis, arguing that emotional catharsis may not always lead to positive outcomes, but instead sometimes exacerbates the expression and duration of negative emotions. Research suggests that excessive emotional catharsis may lead to emotional instability and uncontrolled behaviour, especially in the face of extreme situations, and that excessive release of emotions may enhance an individual's feelings of anxiety and anger.

Catharsis can be used as an effective means of emotion regulation, but its effectiveness is affected by a variety of factors, including individual differences, the choice of catharsis method, and the nature of the emotion. Future research should continue to explore the specific mechanisms of different catharsis styles and further validate their long-term effects on individuals' psychological and physiological health. Meanwhile, how to customise personalised cathartic strategies according to the emotional characteristics and needs of individuals will be one of the important directions for future research.
