I hope you are all safe and sound, and I hope you are staying sane with your social distancing. Please let your kiddos know that I am here and thinking of them!

Earlier today we received confirmation that Beaumont schools will be closed through April 30th. The email stated that: “The state is waiving the requirements for instructional days and minutes, inclusive of Special Education Services, during the school closures that are in response to coronavirus (COVID-19). What this means is that schools will pick up where “they left off” once schools are allowed to reopen. Your child’s educational status and/or graduation status will not be affected by the ordered closure of our schools. State and Federal testing has also been postponed. “

Although I am under no obligation to send home work, I do want to share some of the information and concepts that we would have covered over the next few weeks. I know many of you are attempting to keep life as normal as possible. Feel free to tell your kiddos I am requiring that they do the following work if it will help :)

Here is my proposed schedule. I kept it pretty close to our daily school schedule. Good luck!

8:00-8:30 Review Daily Goals & Writing (Journal, Letters, Free Write)

8:30-9:30 ELA

9:30-10:00 Snack & Play Time

10:00-11:00 Math

11:00-11:30 Writing (Poetry & Narrative)

11:30-12:00 Science/ History

12:00-1:00 Lunch/ Play Time/ Free Time

1:00- 1:30 iReady (alternate between math and reading daily)

1:30-2:00 STEAM/ Arts and Crafts

*** I realize that these times are hard, and you are probably managing multiple children at home, probably working from home, all while trying to stay sane. Know that it is okay if today is a movie day. Here is the "modified schedule" for parent sanity***

30 minutes of Freckle or iReady Reading
30 minutes of silent reading (books, links, audible, etc)
1 Lesson of Zearn
30 minutes of math games/practice (STmath/ Prodigy/ Freckle)
30 minutes of elective (Science/ History/ Art/ ETC)

IT IS OKAY FOR YOUR KIDS TO BE BORED!!! Give them a box of random stuff and tell them to be creative! They can share their creations in our Zoom chats. They can also make up some fun games to play at home.

ELA:

Here are the skills for Unit 5 that we would have covered in Wonders. Students can access the text digitally through their McGraw Hill app on Clever, or you can apply these skills to other texts, such as Time 4 Kids or Scholastic, articles. <del>Here are the weekly assessments for Unit 5 (and the answers).</del><del> I </del><del>recommend using these assessments as a tool to check in with your kiddo and evaluate how they answer questions. Use this as an opportunity to ask them about their thinking and discuss the possible answers.</del> *** I had to remove the weekly assessments per district policy*** USE FRECKLE FOR THE SKILLS OF THE WEEK!

Reading:

Students should be reading a chapter book (or 3) of their choice during this time. I would also have them read some articles from one of the following resources: Time 4 Kids, Scholastic,or Epic

Writing:

We have been working on an opinion essay on zoos, as well as a poetry book. We can put the zoo essay on hold, but students can access the poetry books through google classroom. They were really enjoying this activity, so I would like them to continue to work on this task. I would also recommend that they keep a daily journal about what is going on during this unprecedented time in their lives. Students could also take this opportunity to write a narrative. No boundaries… just writing! They can explore their creative process. They can also write letters to their classmates that they can deliver once school is back in session (cross your fingers).

Math:

We would have finished Module 5 and 6. Students have their Zearn Notes and exit tickets for Module 5. They should be able to complete these at home. Videos teaching these skills can be found here. Zearn can also work as their lesson, but students will need some support to complete these lessons without the in class time. Embark has games, printable resources and quizzes to reinforce the skills.
-Practice math with real world applications imaginelearning.com/blog/2017/04/math-real-life-examples
USE FRECKLE FOR THE SKILLS OF THE WEEK!

Science:
Crash Course Kids Energy
- Explore STEAM activities https://leftbraincraftbrain.com/28-days-of-stem-activities-and-steam-activities-for-kids/

History:

California Missions

Gold Rush Investigation - Key

Additional RESOURCES:

Many paid resources are offering free access for the next few weeks.
