the whale rider
the whale rider is about a young girl named Pai who was taken to her grandpas home when her mother died giving birth to her twin brother who also died at birth. 
her grandpa took care of her while her father lived in the city, but her grandpa was unhappy because she broke the long line of chiefs of the Māori people by being born a girl and only boys could be chief and Pai was the only pure Māori in line to be chief.
she lives in new Zealand with her family, all her friends are boys and when they came of age her grandpa taught all the Māori boys the traditional fighting and dance of the Māori people. Pai always felt left out and would watch them while they while they were training and copy them so she could learn too, but her grandpa saw her copying what they were doing and he was very disappointed in her, it was a sacred thing and girls were not allowed to do it.
Pai was always treated differently because she was a girl, she couldn't be a chief or even learn the Māori traditions. people all got worried one day because a pod of whale washed up on the beach and the whale was a very sacred animal to the Māori people and this meant that something was wrong. adopted is a true story about how a woman has to tell her child that he is adopted, he is in his late twenties, early thirties and has been living with aunt in while his real parents have been living in Greece with his two brothers that hes never met.

his aunt was scared about telling him and didn't know how he would react, since she had kept it from him for so long and hes always been an only child, how would he feel about having brothers.
