Emily Bronte is known for her English literature. Her mother, and sisters death had an effect on her writing. Her grief allowed her to write about hope and emotion. She also mostly about her hometown. To take her mind away from reality, she had a great deal of fantasy poetry as well. A lot of her writing is poetic in a metaphorical way. For example, as already listed fantasy but also spirituality express a greater theme (Winifred).

According to Clifton Fadiman, Clifton Fadiman’s two-page assessment calls the book “one of the strangest novels ever written,” adding, “I have read it five times, and each time I have felt that I was in the grip of a nightmare that somehow made perfect sense.” It was unprecedented at the time and “has had few, if any, descendants.” He notes strong critical disagreements about its success, calls it a strange love story, compares it to an intense, inward-focused fairy tale (347), and says its theme may be “the immortality of a peculiarly intense passion” (348). Of the Brontë sisters, Fadiman thinks “Emily had the most burning imagination and the most powerful intellect” and calls her “wild, withdrawn, and proud,” the creator or characters “doomed by emotions larger and more terrible than most of us ever feel” (349) (qtd. in Evans).
